Birtwistle leads a special victory for Radnor’s senior class

MIDDLETOWN — In 2015, a group of eighth graders watched the Radnor High boys varsity lacrosse team win the PIAA championship.

They didn’t know at the time that they would be members of Radnor’s senior class before the school would be celebrating another victory in a PIAA tournament game.

Junior Jackson Birtwistle scored five goals in helping all those Radnor seniors earn a 14-4 victory over District 3’s third-place team, Hempfield, in the opening round of the Class 3A tournament at Penncrest’s Louis W. Scott Stadium Tuesday afternoon.

The Raiders (17-6), who finished third in District 1, will play a quarterfinal round contest Saturday vs. District 7 runner-up Mt. Lebanon, which got past District 3 champion Palmyra, 10-9, in a weather-shortened game Tuesday.

“This has been awesome,” said senior defender Kieran Sheridan, who helped limit Hempfield (17-6) to one goal in the first three periods – and that goal came 29 seconds into the game. We were really pointing toward this game. We expected that they would come out and try to go after us.”

Bryce Witmer scored for the Black Knights after 29 seconds had been played. By the end of the first period, Radnor was ahead, 5-1. At halftime, the Raiders were on top, 9-1, and by the end of the third period it was 14-1.

The second Hempfield tally didn’t come until the opening minute of the fourth period.

“Their offense works hard,” said Sheridan, who will play football at Middlebury College. “They have some good dodgers, so we knew what we had to work on to be ready for them.”

Birtwistle opened the scoring for Radnor. After John Austen got two of his three goals, Birtwistle scored again. Jack Dooley’s goal late in the opening period gave the Raiders a 5-1 edge at the first break.

Austen, Birtwistle, Drew Brown and David Azzarano were Radnor’s goal scorers in the second period.

“We expected this to be a high intensity game,” said Birtwistle, who plans to play at Marquette University after his Radnor graduation in 2020. “We shared the ball well on offense.”

Raiders senior goalie Archer Darrach stopped seven shots and gave up only one goal before giving way to sophomore Robert Hobbs in the final period.

“We have some great shooters on this team, and they got me ready for this game,” said Darrach, who didn’t get into playing lacrosse until he was an eighth grader. “And some of the guys on our team play club (lacrosse) with some of their players and knew what to expect from them.

PIAA Track & Field: A little change does Radnor relay good in run to silver

SHIPPENSBURG —The switch was a subtle one, so much so that most people probably didn’t notice it when Radnor changed its order for the final of the boys Class 3A 4 x 800-meter relay Saturday at the PIAA Track & Field Championships.

In the District 1 champs and first day of the state meet, the order was the same: Luke O’Malley led off, Chris Belz ran second, Frank Brown third and All-Delco Ethan Zeh on the anchor leg.

For the final, however, Ted Woolery and his staff decided to switch it up. Belz was moved into the leadoff spot followed by Brown, O’Malley and Zeh.

“We knew we had to switch it up to have any shot at C.B. West,” Zeh said.

It was a medal-winning and record-breaking formula.

Belz, Brown, O’Malley and Zeh ran 7 minutes, 43.48 seconds to shatter the school record and finish second behind Central Bucks West.

“Wow,” Brown said when he saw the time on the scoreboard at Seth Grove Stadium.

The rest of the team had the same reaction.

“We knew if we finished in the top five, we would break it,” Zeh said. “We didn’t expect to demolish it. I’m ecstatic.”

Radnor’s silver medal was one of two won by Delco on the day and the first of two medals won by the Raiders. Zeh came back later to take fourth in the 800.

For Radnor, the strategy in the 4 x 800 was to get to baton to Zeh in a good position and let the chips fall where they may. Belz, Brown and O’Malley did that, keeping the Raiders in the hunt and Zeh within striking distance of West anchor Blake Ewaskey.

Zeh gave it a go. He made a late surge in the final 70 meters to finish less than a second behind Ewaskey. Zeh ran a 1:52.1 anchor leg to secure the silver medal for the Raiders.

“He’s good,” said Zeh, who will run at Virginia. “He’s really good. I tried to catch him but he was just too strong.”

Radnor’s goal coming in was to finish in the top five. The school record, which was 7:51, per Woolery, was icing on the cake.

“No. 2 is terrific,” O’Malley added.

Radnor Girls Crew Club Wins a Medal for Coach Margaret at SRAA National Championships

In a dramatic final race of her coaching career at the Radnor Girls Crew Club, the Girls Lightweight Varsity 8+ won silver for Head Coach Margaret Gordon at the SRAA National Championships and became the first Radnor Crew since 2011 to medal in City Championships, The Stotesbury Cup and SRAAs in the same year. Each of the last four years that Margaret Gordon has coached the Radnor Girls Crew Club, four or five boats have qualified for the National Championships. This year was no exception. The Radnor Girls Crew Club sent four boats, advancing the Girls JV 8+ to the semi-finals and the Girls Lightweight Varsity 8+ to the finals.
The Girls Lightweight Varsity 8+ consisting of coxswain Jessica Weitzman, stroke Jenna Spray, Amanda Vitt, Lexi Fogel, Ali Bauer, Clare McDonald, Isabella DiGiacomo, Sophia Hernandez and Tova Tachau won a heat which was stopped and restarted after one crew collided with another. This result landed them in the middle of a seven-boat final. Undaunted by their unusual heat (times were not reported) and the strength of their competition, they rose to the challenge and in an all-out sprint captured silver in the last 100 meters. Their time of 5:20 was the fastest Radnor time of the day and less than half a second ahead of last year’s silver medalist, Nardin, from Buffalo, New York.
The Girls JV 8+ consisting of coxswain Courtney Gallagher, stroke Avery VanDusen, Tara Osborne, Abby Chapin, Jill Getty, Brighton Dewitt, Chloe Sakowski, Taylor Stearns and Maddie Johnson took 3rd in their heat to advance to the semi-final where they finished 5th with a time of 5:31.
The Girls JV 4+ consisting of coxswain Caroline Spaniel, stroke Lindsay Eggert, Kylie Slupe, Meghan Subak and Audrey Margolies finished 5th in their heat with a time of 6:13.
The Girls Varsity 4+ consisting of coxswain Melissa Hunn, stroke Olivia Zenouzi, Megan Frei, Abby Frishman and Sammy Cohen finished 4th in their heat with a time of 6:13.
At the beginning of the year Coach Gordon remarked, “Rowing is a technical sport. It’s not just how strong and how fit your girls are. It’s how well they row.” This year at SRAA’s Radnor rowed well–better than some of their larger competitors. They were also resilient and confident—two qualities Coach Margaret sought to teach the girls through rowing.

Radnor’s reward for winning the Central League title is a league-best four players on the first team All-Central, as picked by coaches. Goalie Phoebe Proctor, defender Melissa Massimino and attackers Cate Cox and Ellie Mueller are all on the first team, released Wednesday. All save for Cox are still just juniors, and two Radnor sophomores (Ellie Rinehart and Tori DiCarlo) are on the second team.

Garnet Valley lands three on the first team, with Kara and Regan Nealon leading the midfield (eight of the 15 first-teamers are midfielders) and Madi McKee in the attack. With the midfield trio of Belle Mastropietro, Alyssa Long and Erin Gormley, Springfield also had three on the first team.

Harriton and Conestoga land two first-team nods each, and Haverford junior midfielder Mia Ciancio rounds out the group.
