Girls Basketball: Hey, 19 works for Radnor with first AAAA states berth

To get to their first PIAA Class AAAA Tournament in history, Radnor knew it would have to do things the hard way. Wednesday, that’s exactly what they did.

The No. 19 seed Raiders used a steely performance at the line late to hang on to a 46-43 victory over Perkiomen Valley and earn one of the two playback berths to states in their first season back in the big-school division.

Wrestling: Radnor’s Meyers’ record stays clean as he heads for regionals

ROYERSFORD — And now there is one unbeaten Delaware County wrestler.

Tom Meyers of Radnor bounced back from an early deficit to win at 170 pounds in the finals of the District One Class AAA West Tournament Monday at Spring-Ford Area High School.

The triumph flushed away the disappointment of a second-place finish in the districts last year and elevated Meyers to 35-0 in all matches as he prepares for the Southeast Region tournament in Oxford.

Boys Swimming: Radnor carries dominance into the postseason

RADNOR — The comprehensive sweep of the Central League authored by Radnor during the dual-meet season meant the Raiders weren’t going to fly under anyone’s radar at the Central League Championships Friday.

Their achievements, even judged by that lofty standard, still managed to impress on the first day of the meet.

The Raiders won both of the relays and two of the four individual events contested, but the coup de grace was a 1-2 finish with their A and B squads in the 200 freestyle relay, an occurrence that just doesn’t happen at meets like this.

Girls basketball: Special moment for Radnor and Jordan family

Throughout her basketball career Radnor High School senior point guard Katie Jordan has been the beneficiary of being able to share memorable moments on the hardwood with her father who also happens to be the head coach.

With this being her senior year, Jordan is all too familiar with the fact that, once district playoffs begin, her season and now her career could end at any time. When she took the court Feb. 14 in the opening round of the PIAA District One Class AAAA tournament against Central League foe Strath Haven, Jordan was hoping it would not be for the final time.

“The team was just talking about that,’ said Katie Jordan. “We discussed how this could be our last game and that Friday could have been our last practice. We wanted to use that as motivation.’

Swimming: Robinson celebrates a sweep of Central League titles for Radnor

None of the members of Radnor’s swimming teams were born the last time the Raiders won the boys and girls Central League championship in the same year, and Tom Robinson was in the early stages of his storied career as head coach of the boys team.

Well, that wait is over. Radnor swept archrival Lower Merion Tuesday aftertoon to complete an undefeated run through the league and claim both titles for the first time since 1990.

Radnor wrestler Tom Meyers is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior 170-pounder is the all-time career wins leader for Radnor, earning his record-breaking 109th win Jan. 28 with a 3-1 victory against Springfield’s Joey Sciarrino, a family friend. As of Feb. 2, Meyers is 29-0 with a career won-loss mark of 110-15. Meyers has finished first in each of the last four Radnor Holiday Wrestling Tournaments, joining older brothers John (Class of 2009) and Bob (a 2011 Radnor grad) for a total of 10 first-place finishes in 10 appearances in the Radnor tourney. Combining Meyers’ career record with Bob (104-14) and John (80-13), the three Meyers brothers are 294-42 at Radnor (as of Feb. 2). Next fall, Meyers will attend University of Massachusetts, where he will play lacrosse.

Main Line Media News: Tell us about your record-breaking win against Joey Sciarrino — what did it mean to you to break the record?

Tom Meyers: I was losing 1-0 after two periods, then I escaped and finally got a takedown to win. Breaking the career win record at Radnor High School was a big deal for me, given all the great wrestlers that have come through the program. The record was previously set by Randall Braunfeld, who wrestled for University of Pennsylvania more than 20 years ago. As soon as my hand was raised, I high-fived my oldest brother John and pointed to my parents in the stands. I have had this goal in my sights for a long time. My dad and brothers have always worked with me to improve my technique and mental preparation. I’m really thankful to my parents who have supported me, as well as the coaches and teammates that have trained with me over the last 12 years.

Girls Basketball: Radnor’s Massimino making nickname for herself

RADNOR — Radnor basketball coach Mark Jordan has an endearing nickname for sophomore forward Nicole Massimino.

“We call her Baby Kelyn,’ he said. “She doesn’t like it too much.’

Jordan is referring to former three-sport Radnor star and 2009 Daily Times Athlete of the Year, Kelyn Freedman, who played one season of basketball and four seasons of lacrosse at Georgetown and currently is on the Niagara basketball team where she is fulfilling her final year of athletic eligibility.

Jordan is just having a little fun with Massimino, who is the granddaughter of Villanova coaching legend, Rollie, and has committed to Notre Dame for lacrosse, which is her best sport. But it’s hard not to see the similarities. Massimino has similar size and athletic ability and this season, she has shown flashes of her potential on the hardwood.

“She’s a freakish athlete and just attacks the rim,’ Jordan said. “She has great court sense and she always understands what’s going on.’
