Girls Soccer: Reluctant Games delivers in clutch for Radnor

RADNOR >> Emily Games didn’t want her number called in penalty kicks. She kept saying no. She kept shaking her head.

“Technically, I’m not good under pressure,” Games explained. “So I didn’t want to let my team down. But everyone kept coming up to me, asking me to do it and step up. So I did, eventually. It was a lot of pressure, but it worked out in the end.”

In the seventh round of penalties, Games’ rocket to the top right corner gave No. 15 Radnor the victory over No. 18 Penncrest in the first round of the PIAA District One Class AAA tournament Tuesday. The Raiders won the shootout, 3-2. The score was tied 0-0 after regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. The Raiders advance to the second round of the tournament Thursday to face No. 2 Pennsbury. That will be a mighty challenge. So will calming down from this thriller.

“The personality of the girls was unbelievable,” Radnor coach Mike Welsh said. “We are now 10 games in a row unbeaten and they’re so resolute. When things aren’t going our way … they’ll dig in, they’ll fight for each other.”

Golf: Radnor’s Walker repeats as state champ at Heritage Hills

SPRINGETTSBURY >> Radnor senior Brynn Walker had struggled with her putting through the District One and East Regional portions of the PIAA golf postseason, settling for respective tied for third- and tied for second-place finishes, respectively. But when it came down to the PIAA Class AAA Tournament at the Heritage Hills Golf Resort, there was  little doubt that Walker, the defending champion, was still the best high school girls golfer in Pennsylvania.

Walker’s length and, probably more importantly, her experience over the quirky 6,223-yard, par-72 Heritage Hills layout were on display Tuesday as she gutted out a 4-over 76 that gave her a 6-over 150 total and a second straight PIAA title. Walker’s three-shot margin of victory over Maddie Sager, a senior at Owen J. Roberts, may make it look like it was easy, but it’s always a struggle at Heritage Hills and Tuesday was no different.

Golf: Team title brightens Radnor’s day

LIMERICK >> There would be no District One individual title for Brynn Walker or Gabby Kim, there would be no trip to the East Regional for Michael Sydnes, who fell one agonizing shot short of advancing.

But in striving to achieve their individual goals — and with a big boost from freshman Jake Calamaro — the Radnor contingent brought a District One Class AAA team title home from Turtle Creek Golf Club Tuesday. It is the third District One boys title for the Raiders, although they got major contributions from Walker and Kim.

When Radnor had a girls team, it earned a pair of district team titles, the second of which Walker contributed to as a freshman.

Walker fired a 1-under 71 to finish in a tie for third at 1-under 142 in the battle for the District One girls individual title, but she was happy to get to continue her pursuit of a second straight PIAA individual title at next week’s East Regional at Golden Oaks Golf Club. She will also have company at the state tournament as the district title earns Radnor a spot in the PIAA team field in two weeks.

Golf: Sydnes, Luchon finish atop Central League field

LIMERICK >> Michael Sydnes, a junior at Radnor, and Josh Luchon, a senior at Springfield, went to Turtle Creek Golf Club for the Central League Tournament Wednesday with a plan.
They knew if they hit the ball well enough to get on the greens at the 6,375-yard, par-72 Turtle Creek layout, it was just a matter of avoiding three-putts at all costs. They knew there was no point thinking they were going to make a bunch of birdies at the Turtle.
That’s why both carded 1-over 73s, sharing first place and comfortably moving on to next week’s District One Tournament back at the Turtle where they can try to execute the same game plan that worked so well Wednesday.
On the girls side, Radnor senior Brynn Walker, the reigning PIAA Class AAA champion, has always seemed to understand how to play the quirky, windswept layout in western Montgomery County.
Walker, the 2014-2015 Daily Times Player of the Year, finished with a flourish, chipping in for eagle at the par-5 finishing hole for a sparkling no-bogey 4-under 68. It looks like it’s all systems go as Walker prepares to make a bid to become a repeat state champion.

Soccer Notebook: Radnor’s Razavi enjoying switch to front line

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> Just as Radnor’s bus rounded the corner into Strath Haven’s Middle School parking lot, Raquel Razavi’s memories came flooding back. She remembered all the details of the game two years earlier — that she’d deputized in goal for her first varsity start, that she’d played well in her estimation, save for two headers that she conceded to a strong opponent. She recalled all of it except for the trivial detail of where that game transpired. Last Thursday, though, she filled that hole in her memory, which ushered back the conflicting takeaway.

“It was cold, but it was my first night varsity game, and I was so scared,” Razavi said. “I remember doing this interview and it was a horrible interview. It was my first big game, and I thought I played amazing. I just loved goalie, and they got (two) headers in. …

“I thought I played my best game in goal but it just sucked.”

Thursday’s 1-0 win by Radnor at Strath Haven eased some of that sting for Razavi, now a senior and a forward/winger who’s come a long way from that quaking sophomore goalie.

Girls Soccer: Holst’s late launch lifts Radnor over Strath Haven

NETHER PROVIDENCE >> With about 15 minutes left Thursday, Radnor coach Mike Welsh made a switch.

Sensing a lull in the constant waves of pressure and possession that Strath Haven had bombarded his team with all night, Welsh gave the signal to Maura Holst to push forward. Instead of sitting and solidifying Radnor’s stout central midfield, she should push up, take the space behind the forwards and shift the numbers of the attack whenever possible.

Holst’s response was exemplary.

Holst cashed in on the escalating pressure with an exquisitely placed shot, turning and shooting from 28 yards out and lofting a perfect chip off the inside of the far post and out of the reach of All-Delco goalie Katie Fisher for the only goal in a 1-0 Central League win.

In a territorial game played under constant rain, Holst’s moment of brilliance in the 73rd minute won an otherwise taut affair, handing the Panthers (6-3, 5-1) their first league loss.
