Austen the hero as Radnor comes back to beat Spring-Ford

ROYERSFORD >> Just two nights earlier, John Austen had been on the wrong side of a late-game comeback.
So when he got the chance to finish off a comeback in Radnor’s favor at Spring-Ford Saturday, the senior attackman made it count.

Austen’s second goal of the game came with 1:01 remaining to give the Raiders their first lead, an advantage they were able to hold for a 10-9 non-league victory over Spring-Ford Saturday.

For Austen and the Raiders (11-5), the victory and the manner in which it occurred was especially gratifying after an 11-9 loss to Garnet Valley Thursday. The Raiders had led 7-4 at the half only to see Garnet Valley hold them to two second-half goals to stay alive in the Central League title race.

“That (loss) was like a dagger to the heart,” Austen said, “but today, we were able to reverse it. This is a big win for us heading into the end of the regular season and the playoffs.”

On Saturday, the Raiders fell behind 5-1 in the opening quarter and trailed 8-5 at the break before turning the tables on Spring-Ford, holding the Rams to only one second-half tally and completing a comeback of their own.

“It’s a testament to (Spring-Ford), how strong they came out, they play physical—but we knew we were better than how we’d played early,” Austen said. “We know if we fight, we can come back and win.”

Austen’s game-winner came at the end of an almost three-minute possession immediately after Jackson Birtwistle brought Radnor even at 9-9 with his third score of the game. The attackman said the possession typifies the Raiders’ offense.

“We always stay in the flow of our offense, but the idea was to shoot only if there’s a 90 percent or better chance of scoring,” he explained. “We want dunks, not three pointers.”

Spring-Ford was unquestionably the better team for the first 24 minutes, as Peyton Gensler made sure his final regular-season game at Coach McNelly Stadium was one to remember, tallying four goals before the break in helping the Rams build an 8-5 halftime lead. Nick Teets had a pair of goals plus an assist on one of Gensler’s scores. Gunnar Romano’s work at the X keyed a 5-1 start for the Rams, as the junior went 9-for-13 on first-half faceoffs (12-of-23 for the game).

Resurgent Radnor on brink of Central title

RADNOR — The Radnor girls lacrosse team didn’t have the spring break it wanted. This year’s out-of-state voyage brought the Raiders through New England … and stung them with three straight losses in Massachusetts and Connecticut, all while Ellie Mueller, last year’s leading scorer, slowly worked back into the rotation from an ankle sprain.

Far from past marauding trips to Texas or the south to romp past the best teams those states have to offer, this one wasn’t exactly an immediate confidence booster.

“We were all kind of down on ourselves because we’re used to going to places where we’re beating the state championships teams, and this was like the opposite situation,” attacker Cate Cox said Thursday. “That whole week, we really worked through it. Our first game was probably winnable, honestly, and by the time we got to Darien (Conn.), we gave them their best game of the season. So I think it gave us a little adversity, a little mental toughness, so coming back has been huge just knowing we have each other’s backs and knowing that even if you’re having a down game, we’re so deep.”

Lessons learned and lumps taken, the Raiders are better for it. They’re also a win from being Central League champs.

Radnor ran off five unanswered goals to start the second half Thursday and smothered Garnet Valley’s attack after the break, earning an 11-6 victory to put them in the driver’s seat for a share of a Central League title.

Radnor (11-4, 9-1) and Harriton are the remaining one-loss teams in the Central, with Garnet Valley (14-2, 8-2) dropping level with Conestoga at two losses. Each team has one league game remaining, with the Raiders taking on bottom-dwellers Upper Darby. Radnor beat Harriton head-to-head, 23-11, in April; including Thursday’s relative blowout, those are the only two games in the virtual round-robin between the four teams decided by more than two goals.

Playing without Mueller, who scored 77 goals last year, introduced the attack’s adversity, and the growth the Raiders were forced into without her has paid dividends now that she’s back. Mueller had two goals and an assist against GV, the same figure as Cox and one of seven Raiders to score. Tori DiCarlo and Cierra Hopson scored twice each.

“We kind of had to switch our offense up a little bit and really work on our cutting and feeding game while she was gone,” Cox said. “We’re so glad she’s back, but I think we did a good job adjusting and taking punches with her gone.”

Mon finds a way for streaking Strath Haven

NETHER PROVIDENCE — Jake Mon’s last name inspires some good-natured razzing by his Strath Haven teammates.

When he steps to the plate, you can hear a chorus of “Mon! Mon! Mon!” emanating from the Strath Haven bench. This goes on for every pitch. Since print isn’t the medium to share sound, just imagine the scene in the Disney classic “Finding Nemo” where the seagulls spot Nemo’s dad, Marlin, in the Sydney Harbour, and are waiting to pounce on the little guy and his friend, Dory.

If you haven’t seen the movie, well, what are you waiting for?

It’s hard not to laugh, then, when you hear the Panthers joshing in the dugout. It’s a rallying cry for Mon, like when he worked a full count in the bottom of the seventh inning in a tie game against Penncrest Thursday afternoon.

Mon had timed the fastball of Penncrest reliever Evan Rosenberg, who gave it everything he had not to walk in the winning run. He fouled off four pitches, but Rosenberg’s final one landed square on the back of Mon, the proud recipient of a walk-off, hit-by-pitch.

Strath Haven 3, Penncrest 2. That’s one way to win a ballgame.

“My mindset was to just stay on top of the fastball and have a good at-bat, stay up the middle,” Mon said. “I know I have to be ready for anything.”

In that situation, though, no one is really expecting to take one for the team.

“He had a great at-bat,” said Haven pitcher Koll Peichell, who hurled a complete game. “I’m just hoping and praying, cheering him on and hoping for the best. (Mon) struggled a lot during the season, so I was glad to see him up there with the chance to win the game for us.”

Mon’s sacrifice was made possible by Peichel’s pitching. After a shaky first inning, in which the Lions scored two runs on a sacrifice fly by Danny McLaughlin and an RBI groundout off the bat of Jeff Lunger, Peichel was excellent.

“I was definitely relying on my curveball because my changeup wasn’t working today,” said Peichel, who allowed five hits and two walks while striking out seven. “I knew I could throw my curveball for a strike when I needed to. I was able to get batters out with that.”

Of course, he received some help from his star catcher, senior Brady Mutz, who picked off Matt Arbogast dancing off third base to quash a second-and-third, one-out rally in the fourth inning. Peichel said Mutz “changes the game,” with his elite ability.
