Girls Basketball: ‘Out of it’ Rigolizzo, Radnor wake up in time to beat Ridley

RIDLEY TWP. — It’s exam week and the Radnor girls basketball team is busy cramming. It’s an exhausting and stressful time for everyone.

“We had a father-daughter game Sunday and came back (Tuesday) and practiced,” junior forward Ellie Mueller said. “It was a mess.”

Ridley was in the same boat.

“It’s not an excuse, obviously,” Radnor coach Mark Jordan said. “But it’s just a bad week. Kids are up until 2 a.m. studying, and they have a lot on their plate.”

Radnor’s junior varsity team headed home after its game Wednesday. Meanwhile the varsity team went ahead and used its own transportation to arrive at Ridley in time.

“We were kind of out of it,” junior guard Julia Rigolizzo said. “Some of us got here late and our warm-up wasn’t what we wanted it to be.”

Thus, this Central League battle wasn’t pretty. It was very much ugly at times. But Radnor found a way to overcome a porous three quarters or so and escape with a 36-28 victory over a plucky Ridley team.

“They played real hard, so you have to give Ridley a lot of credit,” Jordan said.

For Radnor, the victory was its sixth in a row. Every game is critical as it fights for third place in the Central League and a ticket to the conference playoffs next month.

This one wasn’t a piece of art but Radnor will take it.

“I guess it shows that we have a lot of grit,” senior forward Holly Holtsberg said.

Holtsberg was grittier than most down the stretch. She scored the go-ahead basket with two minutes left. She then made a three-point play and helped seal the win at the free-throw line.

“Even when we’re down like that, we all come together to win it out,” said Holtsberg, who scored all seven of her points in the fourth quarter and added 12 rebounds.

Combined, the teams committed 47 turnovers and shot 25-for-109 (22.9 percent) from the floor.

Ultimately, the Main Line Raiders persevered and showed why they should be considered among the top programs in the Central League. Their strong performances in recent weeks earned them the No. 7 spot in this week’s Daily Times Super 7.

Once again, Strath Haven’s Forbes sets Delco meet mark in mile

HAVERFORD – Strath Haven senior Grace Forbes was the only runner to break a meet record at the Delaware County Girls Indoor Track and Field Championships at Haverford College.

Her time of 4:54.76 in the mile run was more than seven seconds faster than the mark set in 2018 – by Strath Haven junior Grace Forbes.

Forbes staged an exciting duel with Academy of Notre Dame senior Jessica Schneider, a University of Notre Dame recruit who finished in 4:56.40.

“We took it to that last 400 and then it was down to who could kick,” Forbes, who is headed to Rice University, said. “It’s been so cold lately, and I would prefer if I could be running outside to train. But I’m where I want to be now, and we have some very important meets coming up. We’re going up to Millrose Games and defend our (4 x 800 relay) championship, and states and meet of champions will be coming up.”

Strath Haven senior Dana Hubbell finished first in the 60-meter hurdles for the second consecutive year, getting to the line in 9.45 seconds, Ridley’s Meghan Lynch was second (9.62).

“I’ve really been working on my starts,” Hubbell, who will study biology and computer science at Northwestern University, said. “I could see everyone in my peripheral vision going past me and I knew I had to work to catch up.

“Our school record is 9.14, and I’m starting to think I can get it this year. I’m trying to improve every week.”

Hubbell is hoping that Northwestern, which dropped track several years ago, will bring the program back.

She also competed in the triple jump and 4 x 200-meter relay Wednesday.

“I like the 4 x 200,” she said. “There’s nothing in my way like those hurdles.”

Haven senior Abby Loiselle took first place in the 3,000-meter run by more than 20 seconds,

Ridley’s Lynch was the winner of the triple jump by more than 3½ feet at 35-10 1/2.

“I hope to be up in the high 36s or at 37 by the end of the indoor season,” she said. “I know I have to be more consistent with my steps. Right now, my second phase is coming up short.”

Junior Lindsey Smith anchored Notre Dame (Hanna Bodner, Kyleigh Calvert, Sydney Worrell) to victory in the 4 x 800 relay.

“This is the first time this team has run together,” Smith, who finished third in the mile run, said. “We have a lot of good 800 runners, and we’re trying to find the perfect fit.

“We were ahead when I got the baton, and I was able to extend the lead.”

D’Entremont shows growth in game, as does Radnor

RADNOR — A season ago, defenses reliably knew where to find Jack D’Entremont. The Radnor wing was, more often than not, parked behind the 3-point line, the kind of spot-up shooter that is the common currency of so many high school half-court offenses.

But the goal for D’Entremont between his sophomore and junior campaigns was to be more than that, and with a three-inch growth spurt sprouting a lanky 6-5 frame, he’s literally and figuratively risen to the challenge.

D’Entremont showed what he can do Friday night, scoring a career-high 23 points – mostly in the paint – to go with nine rebounds as Radnor pulled away from Strath Haven, 63-41.

“That was a big focus in the offseason, to get better, more well-versed,” D’Entremont said. “And I feel like I’ve done that.”

Friday’s evidence was compelling, for D’Entremont and a Raiders team that has surpassed its win total of three from 2017-18. D’Entremont drained nine buckets from the field, only one a 3-pointer. On the season, he’s hit 14 3-pointers, tops on Radnor, among 45 made baskets. Contrast that to last season, when 22 of his 33 field goals were of the 3-point variety.

His scoring average has risen as his game has diversified, from 5.9 points per contest as a sophomore to 13.1 over the first nine games of this season.

Friday’s advantage was particularly marked, from the time D’Entremont jumped center to start the game opposite Strath Haven’s Justin Morris, who is by any reasonable description a guard. The height advantage for D’Entremont in the lane was blatant, and while Strath Haven fought gamely to nullify it for two and a half quarters with sheer determination, the lankier Raiders won out.

“They might have been a little bit bigger, but we just tried boxing out our best, crashing the boards and playing tough,” Strath Haven forward Brady Mutz said. “That’s what it’s all about.”

Radnor’s lead was a slim 31-29 midway through the third quarter. But it ended the frame on a 15-4 run, then outscored Haven 17-8 over the final eight minutes.

Radnor wrestler Jahmair Rider is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior wrestler and second-year captain won the Radnor Holiday Tournament at 152 pounds with four pins and a major decision. He also has won the Travis Manion Wrestling Tournament at LaSalle and delivered a big pin in the Raiders’ 398-36 win against Strath Haven earlier this season. Last winter, he qualified for Regionals. A three-sport athlete, he runs track in the spring, and last fall was a productive wide receiver for the Radnor football team, receiving All-Central League and All-Main Line honors. Radnor wrestling head coach Matt Torresani said, “Jahmair has been a great leader the past two years, both on and off the mat. He has a great work ethic and is always hungry to keep getting better. It’s what makes him not only a great wrestler but an all-around athlete and student. On the mat he’s got a great sense of positions and has built a nice repertoire even though he has wrestled for only a few years. Jahmair always wants to wrestle the best guy on the other team and is disappointed when he doesn’t get to.”
