Boys Lacrosse: Marshall, Radnor mull target practice after win

DALLAS TWP. — By halftime, nursing a lead of seven goals against a team with a scant two first-half shots, Hall Marshall had no problem vocalizing his thoughts.

The second half of what would become a 15-2 Radnor win over District 2 champion and PIAA Tournament newcomer Crestwood wouldn’t be defined by what the scoreboard read after 48 minutes Wednesday.

It would be measured at another time and place, this Saturday and, if all goes to plan, 10 days from now, at HersheyPark Stadium.

“We think we can always get better, have our next quarter always be our best quarter,’ Marshall said. “We take it 12 minutes at a time. We have a system we like to play within, and we thought we could’ve done a better job.’

Girls Lacrosse: Radnor in tune after simple state start

DALLAS TWP. — The seniors on Radnor’s girls lacrosse team have playing long enough to know what a trip to the PIAA’s hinterlands for the first round of the state tournament means.

They also know what it can signify if they take things lightly.

“Today we really just emphasized that this could be our last game, and it’s do-or-die now,’ Radnor captain Hannah Proctor said after her team polished off Wyoming Seminary, 17-1, in the PIAA Class AAA’s first round. “We just tried to keep up the energy a lot and make sure everyone’s ready to go because obviously the next couple of games are going to be huge for us.’

Softball: Radnor needs late-inning heroics to advance

PHILADELPHIA — Holly Pachella isn’t one for fielding a throw on a hop — she admits it’s a weakness of hers. Radnor’s senior catcher takes no issue with grabbing the ball out of the air and applying the tag, though. That’s her strong suit.

And when she hauled in an on-the-money relay throw from Raiders shortstop Katie Jordan with the game — and District One tournament advancement — on the line Friday, Pachella helped her team survive for at least one more game of softball. Her tag on Nazareth Academy’s Maddy Miller ended the bottom half of the seventh inning in a wild way, and allowed fifth-seeded Radnor the chance for a five-run outburst in extra innings, enabling the Raiders to take a District One Class AAA quarterfinal clash in eight innings against No. 4 Nazareth Academy, 8-3, at Philadelphia’s Fluehr Park.

Nazareth’s Tamara Jennings initially wacked a Brooke Nicander pitch to deep center with Miller on first base. Raiders center fielder Brooke McClatchy scampered back to pick up the ball, before firing it to Jordan for the cutoff.

Queue the waterworks. “I literally started crying,’ Pachella said. “I was so overcome with emotion.’

Softball: McGrath powers Radnor past Penncrest

RADNOR — The potential had always been there for Megan McGrath to hit for average and power, while playing plus defense in the outfield. Radnor first-year head coach John Schaefer, an assistant when McGrath was a freshman and sophomore, always believed in McGrath and expected big things of her this season.

“She is our power hitter,’ Schaefer said of McGrath, a junior right fielder. “We don’t have a lot of girls who can drive the ball, but with Meg, the ball jumps off her bat and she gives everyone confidence. When you’re getting ready to go up to the plate and you see someone who can hammer the ball like that, it gives the rest of the lineup a lot of confidence.’

Softball: After a slow start, Radnor putting it together

Radnor senior co-captains Holly Pachella and Brooke McClatchy realize everything the team has overcome and don’t take the late-season success for granted.

The Raiders (11-9) have allowed themselves the opportunity to repeat District One Class AAA softball champions. As the No. 5 team in this year’s tournament, they’ll host 12th-seeded Penncrest (9-10) in the first round Wednesday afternoon.

Pachella is a four-year starting catcher. She’s caught All-Delcos Christy Von Pusch and Izzy Schaefer, and this year was tasked with helping a young pitcher, sophomore Brooke Nicander, find her way in the circle. Pachella has been the team’s rock.

“Brooke had to come in after Izzy, after such a big year, and she’s really developed into her own pitcher,’ Pachella said. “She’s really stepped up and she’s been great all year. It’s hard for any sophomore pitcher to come in and do what she’s done to win us games.’

Boys Lacrosse: Springfield goes Long to pull out win over Spring-Ford

LOWER MERION — In the biggest moment, the biggest spot of the season, Tom Lemieux didn’t hesitate to call his freshman’s number.

Kyle Long didn’t hesitate to seize the spotlight.

His goal with 13 seconds remaining gave Springfield a thrilling 9-8 victory over Spring-Ford Saturday at Harriton High School in the District One quarterfinals. The win clinched a berth in the PIAA Tournament for the Cougars.

“It means a lot that Coach has the confidence (in me) to get it done,’ Long said. “Playing in the Central League, you go through a lot. It’s kind of normal now.’

Boys Lacrosse: Meyers quick on the draw as Radnor advances

LOWER MERION — Tom Meyers can’t recall an opposing team ever throwing five different faceoff men at him in a game. More familiar is the sight of an opposing coach, played Saturday by Bishop Shanahan’s Jon Heisman and his staff, prowling the sidelines, exhorting his team in search of anybody — anybody — capable of stepping to the X and winning a draw off Meyers.

That search proved fruitless, as Meyers was simply dominant in recording a 14-for-16 day and pacing Radnor to a 9-4 drubbing of Shanahan in the District One quarterfinals at Harriton.

Girls Lacrosse: Games, Radnor defense too much for Garnet Valley

WEST GOSHEN — Emily Games had just scored four goals to help No. 2 Radnor advance to the semifinal round of the District One girls lacrosse tournament. The junior is one of the top attack players on the squad, and her performance Saturday at West Chester East High School was exactly what the Raiders were looking for.

At the end of the day, however, the onus was on the Radnor defensive unit, which was excellent in a 12-9 quarterfinal-round triumph over No. 7 Garnet Valley. The defense, consisting of Katy Junior, Nicole Massimino, Lindsay Frumer, Lindsey McShea, Morgan Gryga, Allison Lanzone and Kerry Hamill, forced Garnet Valley to hurt itself. The Jaguars (12-9) committed 14 turnovers, seven in each half.

“We made turnovers, too, so we definitely had to capitalize on their mistakes,’ Games said. “I think we did pretty well on the defensive side, trying to get the ball and force them to turn it over. It worked.’

Boys Lacrosse: Radnor withstands Marple Newtown’s upset bid

RADNOR — This was not your garden variety No. 6 vs. No. 27 matchup. Radnor knew it. Marple Newtown knew it.

After 48 minutes of lacrosse, so did everyone else. The Raiders — the higher seed, the favorites, the state tournament hopefuls — survived an exciting challenge from Tigers, 10-5, Tuesday in the first round of the District One Tournament.

Radnor (14-5) heads to the second round Thursday to host another Central League rival in Ridley. But it did not earn that right without incident. Marple Newtown (7-12) rallied twice in the second half to cut the deficit to one goal. Both times, the Raiders had an answer.
