District 1 Class 3A boys lacrosse: Radnor adds district crown to loaded trophy cabinet

RIDLEY TWP. — Having just claimed the District 1 Class 3A boys lacrosse championship Thursday night, the Radnor players raised the trophy in a group celebration.

Just to be safe, and this time for another photo, the Raptors did it again.

Minutes later? A third celebration.

Good times.

“We didn’t win the district last year,” Ryan Goldstein said. “That was a big deal coming into this one tonight. And everyone brought it.”

The top-seeded Raptors brought it early, nicely managed the clock late and ousted No. 2 seed Downingtown East, 14-3, on Ridley’s Phil Marion Field. And while Radnor did recover from any district-tournament disappointment last year to win the state championship, there was a reason why the celebration all seemed so new Thursday. It’s because, in 15 ways, it was.

“We lost 15 seniors from that team,” said coach John Begier. “So this was sort of a new family that had to come together, and it took a month. In mid-April, we started to find our identity and that passion for the team.”

As June and the state tournament loom, the 19-2 Raptors could not be playing much better. In their first postseason challenge, they outscored Kennett, 16-3. That was followed by a 16-3 triumph over Central Bucks East. In the spirit of Central League lacrosse superiority, Springfield kept it close in the semifinals, the Raptors surviving, 10-9, against last year’s district champs.

Then came Thursday and a test from another set of Cougars, who were 18-2 and had played Radnor competitively in the regular season before falling, 11-7. But with the championship at hand, the Raptors built a 5-1 lead within the first 8:55, then scored seven of the eight second-quarter goals.

“We caught them on a rainy, cold day a couple of weeks ago and happened to play a lot better,” said East coach Joe Horvath. “So we showed some potential there. But that’s not really who they were. They are a much better team than that, as evidenced by today.”

In character, the Raptors showed scoring balance, with Mason Montrella scoring five goals and Nick Lucchesi and Owen Knight scoring two apiece. Max Goldstein, Ryan Goldstein, Pablo Strid, Colin French and Jason Trosset each added a goal. Amid that outburst, as if on cue, was Ryan Goldstein, he of the legendary field vision, who was delivering seven assists.

“Ryan is the quarterback of our offense,” Beiger said. “He is a two-handed player who gets everybody involved. He can score. He can pass. He does the little things. And our guys know, when he has the ball, it is going to be on their stick.”

District 1 Class 3A Boys Lacrosse: Clutch Goldstein helps Radnor get revenge

RADNOR — Radnor advanced to the District 1 Class AAA lacrosse championship final Tuesday with a 10-9 win over Springfield in overtime.

The victory avenges an 11-10 loss in the semis to the Cougars last season, who went on to capture the district championship.

The Raptors take on Downingtown East, an 8-7 winner over Unionville in overtime, for the district title Thursday.

The end came 27 seconds into sudden win overtime.

Mason Brown won the faceoff to give the Raptors possession, coach John Begier called time and everyone who watched Ryan Goldstein put on a show knew he would get the ball.

Goldstein danced behind the net spinning this way and that, got past one check and through another and dashed in front to deliver the winner – his fourth of the game – past Ethan Johnson, who otherwise was sensational in goal for the Cougars, stopping seven shots after entering in the second half.

“I just kind of dodged, came around,” said Goldstein, who had three assists. “It was a great game. We came out ready to play and they answered. We came back strong in the fourth when they caught us. Last year we lost to them in district semis. This is a big game for us to come back. Kind of revenge. We were ready to go today. That’s a big win for us.”

The Cougars (16-5) face Unionville for third place on Thursday at a site and time to be determined.

Springfield senior middie Matt Shandley tallied four goals, three in a spree where the Cougars scored six straight goals to grab a 9-8 lead with seven minutes remaining. Down by four goals at the intermission, the Cougars were in an 8-3 hole with 7:48 left in the third period.

That’s when Shandley got hot and senior defenseman Shane Phillips took over. Phillips caused three turnovers and picked up the bulk of four ground balls in the frame.

“We got down early,” Shandley said. “But like Coach (Tom) Lemeiux always says, ‘you’re never out of it.’ With our faceoff guy (Colin) Hannigan winning faceoffs, we got possession after possession. The momentum just picks up and it never stops. We just ran out of time, really. We allowed too many transition goals, but we fought back. Our season isn’t over. We’ll definitely see them in states.”

Radnor is seeking to become the first Delco team to win back to back state titles since Springfield in 2016-17. Their goalie, Nate Brown, was sensational in net with 13 saves against an aggressive attack. Begier did a solid job of keeping hope alive so the Raptors didn’t fold under immense pressure from the Cougars.

District 1 Class 3A Girls Lacrosse: Sophomore ‘spitfire’ Jansen steers Radnor to states

RADNOR — When Lis Zuern took over as the girls lacrosse coach at Radnor, she knew she would have veteran players and a proud heritage.

As for a most necessary component for a championship team, that was a mystery, one that didn’t take long to solve.

“I had no idea if we had a goaltender,” said Zuern, the Raptors’ first-year coach. “They didn’t tell me that.”

Turns out, the Raptors would have a sophomore, Arden Jansen, who not only has made an early difference in the District 1 Class 3A tournament, but has become an unexpected rookie leader for the defending state champion. Two days after making a spectacular late save to help push the Raptors into the quarterfinals, Jansen made six critical saves Saturday as Radnor outperformed Unionville, 11-6, to win a semifinal berth Tuesday against Conestoga.

“Arden is our brick wall back there,” Zuern said. “She pumps up the team. She’s the energy of the team. She’s definitely a spitfire. She always challenges the attack in practice and everything. She’s awesome.”

For a veteran team with multiple scoring threats and a sturdy defense, it’s noteworthy that a first-year player would be so influential. Jansen, though, has been readying for that challenge for most of her life. The sister of honorable mention All-Delco keeper Abby Jansen, who helped the Raptors to that 2021 state championship before continuing her career at the University of Virginia, Arden Jansen tends goal with a veteran steadiness.

With an awareness of the value of Saturday’s game — the winner would be guaranteed a spot in the state tournament — Jansen knew she had to be ready.

“I had a good warmup,” she said. “And if I have a good warmup, and I am seeing the ball, I think I can just carry that over to the game itself.”

Just as Jansen gave her teammates comfort, the Raptors provided the keeper with early support, jumping to a 6-2 lead by halftime. When that gap widened to 9-2 early in the second half, it would be up to the defense to prevent any late rally. That’s when Jansen repeatedly blunted would-be Longhorns bursts as the fourth-seeded Raptors improved to 16-4. Fifth-seeded Unionville (15-5) will try to take the playback route to a state tournament bid, beginning with a Tuesday visit from Downingtown East.

District 1 Class 3A Boys Lacrosse: Fast start keeps Montrella, Radnor rolling

RADNOR — John Begier has been around lacrosse long enough to know that the end of any season can come in a hurry. For that, the Radnor coach will always maintain a policy: Do not wait around for it to happen.

“We need to be ready right out of the gate, to be aggressive, play hard, hunt groundballs, all of that,” Begier said. “Everybody has to be ready to play.”

That plan worked well enough for a 2021 state championship, and it has been on vivid display during the Raptors’ two postseason encores, including a 16-3 victory Saturday over Central Bucks East in the District 1 Class 3A quarterfinals.

Two days after scoring nine first-quarter goals against Kennett, the top-seeded Raptors scored eight times in the first dozen minutes against the eighth-seeded Patriots to earn a semifinal opportunity Tuesday against Springfield.

They figure to be ready.

“We are starting to really get our momentum going early in the game,” Radnor attackman Mason Montrella said. “And I think that’s really great for how we are going to continue our playoff season.”

Montrella scored three first-period goals against Kennett Thursday, then stuffed two of his three goals into the first quarter Saturday.

“Our attack is playing well in general,” Begier said. “They are unselfish. They’re getting quality shots. And Mason is a good shooter. He’s confident and he takes high-quality shots. He doesn’t force things that aren’t there, so his shooting percentage is really strong.”

Montrella, Ryan Goldstein and Cooper Mueller posted hat tricks, and Tucker Graham added two goals. Giordan Ramando, Owen Knight, Will Kaplan, Kessy Cox and Ryan Webb chipped in a score apiece. Goldstein provided four assists, Colin French two, and Max Goldstein and Owen Smith one apiece.

“They are a quality team,” Patriots coach Bruce Garcia said. “There wasn’t a groundball they didn’t pick up. I don’t believe we were outhustled. But with their talent, they didn’t have a hole at any position at any time. They are a quality team, very, very good.”

Radnor scored six of the first seven goals and received steady goalkeeping from Nate Brown, Nick DeCain and John Webb to improve to 18-2.

Thomas Williams scored two goals, and Nicholas Knepp added one for 13-5 Central Bucks East, which will spin into playbacks Tuesday against visiting Conestoga for a chance to get to states.

“All the other sports at East have hung their cleats up or put their bats away, and our players are still playing,” Garcia said. “What is going to define them as a player or a person is what they do next. In light of defeat, they have to come back and play as hard as they possibly can. That will be a marker on their character.”
