Girls Lacrosse: Kenneally sparks rally in big win for Radnor

RADNOR — Senior Lexi Kenneally could hardly handle the pressure Tuesday. It was getting late and the Radnor girls lacrosse team was clinging to a one-goal lead against Garnet Valley, the reigning Central League and PIAA champion. This was no ordinary contest. It was a showdown of Pennsylvania powers, a game that could be played again in May or June for a much bigger prize.

Kenneally was nervous, but she never rattled. When Radnor needed her to make a big play, she was there.

Radnor lacrosse coach George Corrigan left lasting legacy

Radnor – The funeral mass at the jam-packed Villanova University main chapel was an emotional one, as a standing-room-only crowd of more than 700 people paid tribute to former Radnor lacrosse coach George Corrigan Feb. 28.

Corrigan, who earned All-American honors while playing lacrosse for the University of Maryland in the 1950s, and was an assistant lacrosse coach at Radnor High School since 1999, touched many people’s lives – on and off the lacrosse field.

His oldest son, George (nicknamed “GT”), a former assistant coach of the Philadelphia Wings, said, “My Dad had the most positive attitude and outlook on life of anyone I have ever known. Every person he knew was either a ‘great guy’ or ‘one of the all-time greats.’ A few days before he died, I was sitting with [my sister] Kelly at Bryn Mawr Hospital and I asked him how he was feeling and he immediately said ‘Great!’ and he smiled at us.

Girls basketball: Radnor’s Kristin Hamill is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

A junior forward, Hamill was on fire in the PIAA Class AAAA District One playoffs, averaging 16 points and 12 rebounds per game in a three-win week that saw No. 19 seed Radnor earn its first-ever PIAA Class AAAA state tournament berth. She scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in a thrilling come-from-behind win against No. 6 seed West Chester Rustin (who played in the PIAA Class AAAA state final four last winter); then tallied 13 points and nine rebounds in a win against 10th seed Perkiomen Valley; then scored 13 points and grabbed nine upset in a huge upset win against top seed Boyertown. For the season, she averaged 11.8 ppg and 7.8 rpg for the Red Raiders (20-9). A three-sport athlete, she plays soccer in the fall and rows crew in the spring.

Main Line Media News: What, to you, was the most memorable moment of Districts? Was there one play that stands out in your memory – can you describe the play, and your role in it?

Kristin Hamill: Kristin Hamill: In the game against WC Rustin when we were down by eight points with 2:30 left in the game and we turned the game around and won. The play that stands out for me was in the final minute, when we were trailing by five points and I had just rebounded the ball and two defenders were on me. Katie Jordan was right next to me but I also saw Nicole Massimino running down the court to our basket. I decided to throw a long pass to Nicole and she went up for a layup, scored and was fouled. She made her free throw and we were behind by only two points with less than a minute left. (Editor’s note: Kristin Hamill then tallied a basket to tie the score 45 seconds left).

Main Line Media News: Who is your favorite basketball player?

Kristin Hamill: Rajon Rondo is my favorite basketball player because my nickname on my AAU team, the Rebels, is Rondo.

Kristin Hamill’s top picks

Favorite book: The Glass Castle.

Girls swimming: Martin, Cullen are fit to be tied in 100 free

PHILADELPHIA — When they touched the wall and glimpsed the scoreboard, there were varying layers of surprise for Radnor’s Julia Cullen and Strath Haven’s Summer Martin.

That soon gave way to smiles at a coincidence that was almost too good to be true.

The training partners at Suburban Swim Club didn’t just register identical times of 51.94 seconds, tying for second place in the second-to-last heat of the Class AAA 100 freestyle at La Salle University’s Kirk Natatorium Friday. They didn’t just share fifth place and the final automatic bid to the PIAA Championships (which technically goes to Cullen thanks to her higher seed time, though it’d take a monumental and unprecedented wave of speed statewide for Martin not to join her at Bucknell).

They also share a piece of history by owning the Delco record in the event.

Boys Swimming: Giannella gets it done leading off for Radnor

HILADELPHIA — It wasn’t until about 20 minutes before the Radnor 400 freestyle relay Friday evening that the Raiders’ foursome was set, a consequence and benefit of the tremendous freestyle depth coach Tom Robinson has at his disposal.

So when Steve Giannella finished a so-so swim in the 100 backstroke where he was four tenths of a second slower than his seed time, Robinson didn’t think twice about subbing in Giannella’s brother, Greg.

Radnor's Eli Avart makes a turn on his way to a seventh-place finish in the 100 backstroke at the District One Championships Friday that helped the Raiders finish fourth in the Class AAA team standings. Basketball: Radnor’s reward is a meeting with O’Hara

It took three straight wins over top-10 seeds for Radnor to earn the ninth seed in District One and a berth in the PIAA Class AAAA girls basketball tournament. The reward for a squad that entered the District One tournament as the 19th seed is another contest (its first in the Class AAAA state tourney) in which it will be a marked underdog. Radnor takes on District 12 champion Cardinal O’Hara in Friday night’s opening round at Lansdale Catholic. Tipoff is at 6.

The winner of that matchup will get the winner of Central Dauphin East and Parkland, the third-place teams from Districts Three and 11, respectively, in the second round Tuesday, March 10.
