District 1 swimming championships: Eruslanova primes for states with two district titles

Katya Eruslanova is in fine form as she heads toward a defense of her PIAA state title.

The Haverford High junior and reigning Daily Times Girls Swimmer of the Year won the 200 individual medley for the second straight season and added the 500 freestyle crown at the District 1 Class 3A meet Saturday and Sunday at York Area YMCA.

Eruslanova defended her crown in the IM by going 2:01.66. That’s a second faster than she was last year and even quicker than the 2:01.81 she used to win the state title in 2021. She added a victory in the 500 free in 4:52.88, an event in which she was the state silver medalist last year.

Eruslanova will have local company at states in two weeks, with District 1 champions getting an automatic place in states alongside the 24 top times statewide once thgeOne of those extremely likely to get there is Strath Haven’s Sydney Bergstrom, the reigning state champ in the 500 free. Bergstrom was fourth at districts her signature event in 4:57.85. She also finished seventh in the 200 free, in what is likely a sufficient time to qualify.

Radnor’s Audrey Collins had a stellar first day, finishing third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 fly. She should be joined at states by teammate Marina Wang, who took ninth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100. Radnor should place two relays in states, with the 200 medley relay of Wang, Collins, Anne Lindgren and Avery Barber finishing third and the 400 free relay of Collins, Kelsey Wakiyama, Barber and Wang in sixth. The Raptors finished sixth in the team standings, the only Delco team in the top 12.

Springfield’s Mary Kubiak is in great shape after finishing fourth in the 100 back. She was also 10th in the 50 free. Her sister, Michelle, was 13th in the 200 free, facing a less certain wait. Garnet Valley freshman Zoey Rogers had a great meet, finishing eighth in both the 100 fly and 100 back. Lindgren was ninth and Wakiyama was 12th in the 100 fly.

In the Class 2A girls meet, Delco Christian senior AnnaScott McKeaney did the sprint double, winning the 50 free in 24.31 seconds and the 100 free in 52.67 to book states trips.

On the boys side, Jake Kennedy is bound for states again, part of a deep Springfield contingent. The sophomore went 20.99 in the 50 free to take home the silver medal, then went fifth in the 100 free. Teammate Jacob Johnson likewise grabbed a silver medal, going 49.92 in the 100 fly.

Hicke, Radnor keep flowing into district final

RADNOR — Jackson Hicke was still on the floor in the fourth quarter, emptying the tank, even though his team was comfortably ahead on the scoreboard.

The athletically gifted, 6-4 junior forward made everything look cool. With the game well in hand, Hicke delivered a behind the shoulder pass to Eric Vollmer, who converted for an easy layup. That’s the way things are going for the Raptors this season.

Top-seeded Radnor had plenty of fun trouncing No. 4 Upper Moreland in Saturday’s District 1 Class 5A semifinal, 63-35. The victory puts the Raptors in a district championship game for what is believed to be the first time since 1960, when they won the title and finished runners-up in states. Radnor plays No. 2 Chester in the final next Saturday at Temple University’s Liacouras Center.

“We love playing with each other and all we want to do is win,” said Hicke, who poured in a game-high 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the floor. He went 7 of 9 from the free-throw line and grabbed nine rebounds. “It translates on the floor and it’s why we are doing so well this year. Our chemistry, I think, is really unmatched.”

Radnor scored the game’s first 10 points, causing Upper Moreland to fight an uphill battle from the start. Radnor’s superb defensive led to all sorts of trouble for UM’s ball handlers. Guards were easily rattled and turned the ball over several times in the opening period.

“We were trying to disrupt their offense right away and if we got good ball pressure, they can’t get into their sets like they want to. That’s what we focused on,” said point guard Danny Rosenblum, who provided nine points, two assists and one steal. “We were able to go out there and get it done.”

Radnor’s offense was at times lethal, as the combination of Hicke and Charlie Thornton dominated early. Thornton canned a 3-ball to open the scoring and netted six of his 11 points in the second quarter. The rangy junior seemingly came from nowhere to block a Matt Tiernan shot in the third, which energized an already boisterous home crowd.

Radnor was effective in transition, too. Cooper Mueller’s dish to Cliff Smith for a slam dunk was the top highlight. Consider the breakaway a present of sorts for Smith, who was celebrating his birthday Saturday.

Mueller-charged momentum sends Radnor past SV

RADNOR — The dunk was almost the least of it from Cooper Mueller, even before he took flight from the floor at Radnor High School Wednesday night.

Countless times this season, the junior guard has jumped a passing lane or picked a pocket, turning those loose balls into easy baskets. When he jarred the ball loose in the second quarter against Sun Valley, he was well on his way to another momentum-injecting passage of play, no matter how he elected to finish it at the other end.

The dunk, and the resultant surge of electricity through the Radnor bench, was just a bonus; an extra exclamation point. Mueller’s defense keyed an early rout by the Raptors, dashing past the No. 8 Vanguards, 53-28, to book a place in the District 1 Class 5A semifinals and a first states berth for Radnor since 2006.

“That’s a great momentum shifter,” wing Charlie Thornton said. “He does it all the time in practice and then in the game he finger rolls it. I was like, Coop, just dunk it. And he finally did today. It was great.”

Top-seeded Radnor (21-3) will host No. 4 Upper Moreland in a semifinal Saturday afternoon at 3.

Mueller, as befits the complementary role he plays in the Radnor side, downplayed the impact his highlight played.

“We often have momentum players,” he said. “Charlie Thornton is normally our momentum play guy. Or Jackson Hicke hitting a deep 3. But we like to feed off our own energy. I wouldn’t say that was huge for us, but we like to live off those plays.”

Either way, the steal was as emblematic of Radnor’s dominance as the slam. Radnor forced 13 turnovers via 11 steals. The Raptors also blocked six shots, Cliff Smith and Mueller supplying two each, one of Mueller’s sounding more at home finishing a swing on a volleyball court.

By halftime, Mueller had 10 points. So did Sun Valley.

“Cooper’s energy on defense, his motor on defense, it’s incredible,” Thornton said. “He’s always up in someone’s face, no matter who it is. He’s going to get to those passes, and for him to finish it like he did today, that was big.”

Radnor spread the scoring around. All five starters scored in the first quarter, after which the Raptors led 19-6. They didn’t slow the pace offensively until the third quarter, by which point their lead had stretched to 41-12.

Given a nine-day layoff since a loss to Lower Merion in the Central League final, a fast start was paramount. Radnor delivered crisp ball movement (Danny Rosenblum had three first-quarter assists). and 3-pointers by Pierce Justice and Thornton forced Sun Valley out of its 3-2 zone.

Radnor holds off Upper Moreland in fourth, advances to District 1-5A semifinals

UPPER MORELAND >> On a day dubbed “Twosday,” it was only fitting there were two celebrations for the Radnor girls basketball team Tuesday night.

The first came with its thrilling 46-42 victory over Upper Moreland in the District Class 5A quarter, securing a spot in states. The second came just moments after when the Raptors learned that thanks to Villa Maria’s upset of Marple Newtown, they would be home for Friday’s semifinal contest.

“Amazing. We knew we had this game from the beginning but they scared us at the end,” Radnor’s Mary Sareen said of the Bears’ fourth-quarter comeback. “They scared us, but we pulled through. We kept playing hard. We never give up no matter what. Everyone comes through in their role and how they play. And we had no doubts it was our game.”

Sixth-seeded Radnor now gets ready for its home contest with No. 7 Villa Maria. The No. 3 Bears can still earn one of the five states spots, and will go into district playbacks Friday.

“I told the girls, our goals are not over,” Bears coach Matt Carroll said. “The only goal we can’t accomplish is to be district champs. We can still make it to states.”

The Bears came roaring back into the contest in the fourth, with a three by Kiera Coyle (10 points) pulling Upper Moreland to within 42-33 with 4 minutes, 33 seconds left.

The Bears started forcing turnovers and hitting big shots at the other end, with Mikel Lancit finding Holly Gohl underneath for two of her game-high 18 points, slicing it to 42-35.

The Bears got another stop, and then Coyle nailed another three, bringing the crowd to its feet and the score even tighter, to 42-38 with 2:40 to go.

“Keeping calm is very difficult but we were able to do it,” said Sareen.

Two free throws by Paige Yurchak provided Radnor some breathing room at 44-40 with 1:16 left. EmmyFaith Wood’s (12 points) pair at the other end made it a one-score game again, at 44-42 with 35 ticks left.

The Bears would have a chance in the final seconds, but Sareen got to a loose ball, was fouled, and went to the line with seven seconds left.

She calmly sank both shots, icing the game for the Raptors.

“I’ve had some foul shooting trouble recently, but I’m glad I made those two,” said Sareen, who had a team-high 14 points. “And Paige made her two. They all matter at the end.”

Radnor built a comfortable pad in the first half, with balanced scoring by Yurchak, Ava Gummel, Sareen and Ellie Davis producing a 32-18 advantage.

The Raptors led 40-29 after three and then braced for the fourth.

“Our strong first half really helped us out,” Sareen said. “When we don’t have to scramble around when we’re down, it’s much easier to play our game and play our pace. So it’s good we got the first-half lead.”

A hook shot by Gohl made it 42-40 and Upper Moreland’s footsteps were getting closer.

District 1 Girls Basketball: Davis helps script Radnor’s convincing win over Penncrest

RADNOR — After taking last year off to train for rowing, Ellie Davis was convinced she had to return to the Radnor girls basketball team this season. Her teammates are happy she’s back and playing well.

Davis, a forward/center, has been integral to the Raptors’ success under new head coach Rob Baxter. On Friday night she scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and came away with five steals to help No. 6 Radnor to a 44-30 win over 11th-seeded Penncrest in the first round of the District 1 Class 5A tournament. The Raptors travel to No. 3 Upper Moreland Tuesday.

“From my perspective this is probably my last chance to play basketball. I know it’s not something I’m not going to keep on doing,” Davis said. “I’m going into rowing, so I’ve got nothing to lose and I’m just looking to have fun out there. It’s been something I’ve been doing for a really long time and it’s a lot like riding a bike. It’s fun to have it as a secondary sport.”

Davis is a multi-faceted student-athlete with a bright future ahead. She is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, the Radnorite, and in 2020 won a Keystone Press Award for her reporting on the disparity within Pennsylvania’s educational system. Davis also helmed a student-led organization called Radnor for Reform, which had a major impact on the decision to change the school’s mascot, from Raider to Raptor.

“Maybe I’ll even write for the sports page in college,” said Davis, who will attend Williams College in Massachusetts.
