Long-awaited Hannum hitch a winner for Radnor

RIDLEY TWP. — Thomas Hannum and Mark McKeon practiced the exact play every day at practice since they were freshmen.

McKeon runs a hitch route about 10 yards deep and Hannum hits him in stride. It’s their play.

In Hannum’s first varsity start at quarterback Friday, he connected with his buddy McKeon for a touchdown. And it was a pass-and-catch the seniors won’t soon forget, the one that got their team on the scoreboard and on the way to an emotional 12-7 victory at Ridley’s Phil Marion Field to close the 2020 season.

“What a lot of people don’t know is we’ve been doing this for four years,” McKeon said. “Me and Tom, after every practice, we would throw extra reps and out-and-up was our play. Every day we put in extra reps and it paid off in the biggest moment of our high school careers.”

Radnor coach Tom Ryan informed Hannum he was starting at quarterback for the first time after J.P. Moreland, who is the team’s No. 1, was hobbled by an injury throughout the week. Moreland was ranked as the second-leading passer in Delco entering the week.

The call to Hannum paid dividends for the Raiders. Hannum played with confidence and smarts. He showed tremendous athleticism running the ball (79 yards on 12 carries). and completed 7 of 17 passing attempts for 100 yards. The most memorable pass, of course, was the touchdown to McKeon to put the Raiders ahead 6-0 in the third quarter.

“I was nervous before, but this was the best way to play my last game,” Hannum said. “It was the best way it could have turned out.”

Radnor effectively the iced the win — its second against Ridley in three seasons — when senior running back Scott Belveal broke off an 80-yard scoring run with 4:32 to go. Belveal was a bulldog for the Raiders all year and carried the offense once again Friday night. He gashed the Ridley defense for 223 yards on 30 carries.

Hopson’s career day powers Radnor into Central League semifinals

RADNOR — By her recollection, the most goals Cierra Hopson had ever scored in a field hockey game was two.

That was before Monday.

With her father, Mike, and grandfather, George, looking on, the senior forward had the game of her life in the quarterfinal round of the Central League tournament. Hopson found the back of the cage four times to power Radnor to a 7-2 triumph over Marple Newtown at Encke Field.

“I’ve never scored that many,” Hopson said. “Not even close.”

Hopson’s performance wasn’t a surprise. Third-seeded Radnor has been on an offensive tear lately, putting up 26 goals in its last three game while surrendering just the two goals the Tigers scored.

“I think today we knew it could have been our last game so we stepped it up,” Hopson said.

There’s more to it than that, especially in a season as disjointed at this one due to COVID-19. First, the Central League planned to move all fall sports to the spring. Then, like many other leagues, it decided to reverse course and play an abbreviated season with a league playoff instead of participating in the district and PIAA tournaments.

Practice didn’t begin until Sept. 29 and the first game was Oct. 17. That’s usually when the regular-season is wrapping up, not starting.

“We’ve finally it our stride,” Radnor coach Katie Maguire said. “It takes a little while to click and we’re finally able to do that. The girls do a really good job of cheering each other on and hyping each other up and that’s super important. Today they did a much better job of that.”

Hopson and fellow senior Madison Milhous were on the same page. The pair teamed up for two goals less than four minutes apart to give Radnor a 2-0 lead after one quarter. After junior midfielder Hope Delaney tallied an unassisted goal, Hopson and Milhous connected again to give Radnor a 4-1 advantage at halftime.

“I think we had one of our best games today,” Delaney added. “We really worked together and communicated a lot more than we usually do. After the first quarter we talked about how we had to stay strong.”

Radnor kept the heat on the Tigers. Hopson put home a pass from senior Sheila Esgro less than five minutes into the third period, and Delany tallied an unassisted goal to make it 6-1. Gracie Bookbinder closed out the scoring for Radnor off an assist from Grace Purcell.

Daiutolo connection sparks Radnor in to Central semis

RADNOR — A season ago, then-sophomore Emily Daiutolo earned All-Central recognition at center back for Radnor. This year, as tactical needs have shifted, Daiutolo has found herself farther up the park, dictating the game from midfield.

Tuesday, she showed that in either position, she can have plenty of influence.

Daiutolo’s header off a corner kick by younger sister Jane with seven seconds left in the first half was the decider, leading Radnor to a 1-0 win over No. 6 Springfield in the Central League quarterfinals. The victory sends third-seeded Radnor into Thursday’s semifinal against No. 2 Conestoga, which advanced via forfeit over Strath Haven.

The sisterly connection paid off on the corner. Radnor had two corners minutes before being turned away, one on an insane goalmouth scramble cleared only for Jane Daiutolo to lash a volley that goalie Olivia Hannah dove to save, the second another scramble that ended in a blocked shot from outside the box.

With time ticking down and the whipping wind at Encke Field still at Radnor’s back, Jane Daiutolo lofted in a perfect ball that Emily ran onto and planted a forceful downward header, leaving Hannah no chance.

“We prefer a driven ball into the six anywhere, just try to get a head on it or any body part,” Emily said. “It was a prefect ball, and I just had to get something on it.”

It’s but one way in which Emily Daiutolo applied her stamp on the game. The same traits that serve her in defense – field vision, poise under pressure, the ability to pick the right ball at the right moment – are magnified in midfield. She’s not just the defense’s escape valve but an early wave of attack, the conduit between the two phases. She has the calming presence that allows the game to settle around her when the ball finds her.

In the first half, for instance, the game was fairly sedate, both teams acclimating to the shifting wind, before the raft of Radnor set-piece chances. That allowed Daiutolo to put her foot on the ball and dictate tempo, switching sides, engaging wingers and keeping Radnor’s defense out of trouble by pushing the ball into Springfield’s end of the field.

“You have to be quicker on your feet and know where everyone else is,” Daiutolo said. “You have to pretty much have a decision on where you’re going to play it before you even get the ball. It’s much quicker, but I like it a lot.”

“She’s such a rock-solid player in the middle,” Radnor goalie and senior captain Elise Palmer said. “She knows what she wants to do with the ball, and she makes me so much more comfortable and is a good communicator, so she’s amazing anywhere on the field. … She’s such an intelligent player that if you’re in trouble, get it to Emily and she’ll calm things down.”

Radnor, which won the regular-season meeting between the teams 2-0, largely controlled the first half, the wind a definite factor. Hannah, a sophomore backup who came into the lineup three games ago when Emily Boyer was injured and pitched a shutout in the opening round over Marple Newtown, had to make a save within the first two minutes and was kept busy.

Radnor’s Matt Miller is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

The senior striker tallied two goals in a recent 3-2 win against a powerful Lower Merion team that returned nine of 11 starters after a trip to the state quarterfinals last fall. Miller has been a productive scorer for the Raiders this fall, as they have posted a 7-0 record as of Nov. 8. Last fall, Miller was a key offensive component on a Radnor squad that posted a 13-3-3 record and received second team All-Main Line honors. Off the pitch, Miller is a sports writer for Radnor’s school paper, is a member of the school’s academic quiz team in the topics of sports and American history, and participates in Speakup, an organization that discusses timely, relevant topics, including mental health. Radnor boys’ soccer head coach Joe Caruolo said, “Matt has come a long way since his freshman year. Matt was always a very thoughtful and skilled player, but with his physical and mental growth combined with a coming to understanding about the importance of grit and resilience, he is now a weapon. Matt will only continue to grow.”
