Despite being ‘so bad,’ Mueller has career game in leading Radnor past Penn Wood

LANSDOWNE — Ellie Mueller laughed after she was told she played one of the best basketball games of her life in the District 1 Class 5A quarterfinals Saturday.

“I was so bad,” the Radnor High senior said. “Did you watch the game? Did you see my shot chart? Are you kidding me?”

OK, the modest Mueller did struggle from the floor in the early going. But she turned it on and absolutely crushed it in the second half.

Everyone in attendance watched Radnor girls basketball’s all-time leading scorer generate a career-high in points Saturday against No. 2 Penn Wood.

Mueller produced a triple-double with 33 points, 16 rebounds and 10 steals to lead No. 10 Radnor to a wild and entertaining 69-57 victory.

The Raiders travel to Harriton High Tuesday night to face No. 3 Great Valley in the semifinal round. Coach Mark Jordan’s team locked up a spot in next month’s PIAA tournament, the program’s fifth states berth in six seasons.

Radnor’s team shirts have the slogan, “Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out,” and it’s around this time every season that Jordan gets the best out of his players.

Mueller and junior guard Brianne Williams gave Jordan their very best. And so did sophomore Ellie Davis, who provided a big boost off the bench.

Mostly, though, Saturday was the Ellie Mueller Show. It took some time for the Raiders to hit their stride, but they overcame a wonky first half and 10-point deficit in the third quarter.

‘We went into the locker room at halftime (trailing by three points) and knowing that we weren’t playing the way we like to play,” Mueller said. “We weren’t running the floor, we weren’t composed. … We were in that area between pushing it and settling and that was not working for us. We started to chip away and I didn’t even realize when we went up that were up. It happened pretty fast.”

The Raiders forced the Del Val League champion Patriots to commit 11 turnovers in the third quarter. Radnor pressed and caused havoc. The rangy, athletic Mueller often got her hand on the ball to disrupt passing lanes. Penn Wood is also a team that likes to run the floor, but it couldn’t handle Radnor’s pressure and transition game.

The Raiders thus closed the third quarter on a 23-7 run. Mueller accounted for 14 points and four steals in the period. She controlled the paint and outplayed Penn Wood power forward Jada Hutt, who went for 29 points and 20 rebounds in the Patriots’ thrilling six-overtime win over Marple Newtown in the first round.

“We knew that we could turn it around on them,” Mueller said. “(Hutt) can cause some serious match-up issues down low. She has the ability to go up and get those rebounds and put them back. That was one of our main struggles going into halftime, we weren’t boxing out well and we weren’t converting on the offensive and defensive rebounds that we needed to be getting. … Once we started turning that around, we had Ellie Davis come in and start grabbing those rebounds and that was very helpful.”

Mueller approached Jordan at halftime and told him that Davis deserved to see playing time in the second half.

“She told me to put Davis in, that I’m the coach and that it’s my team,” said Jordan, who was less demonstrative on the bench than usual due to a bout of laryngitis. “I said, ‘No, Ellie, you’re the captain. It’s your team.’ She’s better at this coaching thing that I am.”

In any case, the move to insert Davis paid dividends for Radnor, which for most of the half had three or four “bigs” on the floor. Mueller, Davis, Sally Austen and Margaret Mooney provided match-up problems for the Patriots.

Radnor’s Ellie Mueller, right, had a career game but apparently wasn’t impressed during the Raiders’ District 1 Class 5A quarterfinal win over Penn Wood Saturday.

Radnor puts memories, Upper Moreland behind in Class 5A victory

RADNOR — Just before Radnor was about to lose its only playoff basketball game last season, the key juniors were removed from the game.

The thinking began at that point.

It has yet to end.

So it was on the eve of what would be a 50-41 first-round victory Wednesday over visiting Upper Moreland in the PIAA District One Class 5A tournament that the Raiders’ captains would recall that scene one last time.

“We were down double digits, about a minute left, at Unionville,” Jack d’Entremont would recall. “I just remember that feeling. We said we would not go through that again. So we really used that to motivate us tonight to get the job done.”

That pregame conversation involving d’Entremont, Pat Boujoukos and Josh Savadove resonated and the Raiders responded, taking an early lead, keeping command for most of the game, holding off a tidy Upper Moreland fourth-quarter rally and earning a quarterfinal date Saturday at top-seeded West Chester East.

The rangy, 6-5 d’Entremont, who is receiving intense interest from several Division 3 programs, scored 22 points and used his length to key multiple successful Radnor defenses.

“He’s a very good player,” Radnor coach Jamie Chadwin said. “He’s an unbelievable competitor. And when you talk about confidence, he’s never one to shy away from any matchup. Even when he missed two or three in a row tonight, he kept going and he’s got that mentality that he’s going to make the next one.”

With the ninth-seeded Bears playing with early determination, eighth-seeded Radnor needed Lewis Robinson’s drive and layup at the first-quarter horn to take a 10-9 lead. But the Raiders mixed their 1-2-2 zone press, a little man-to-man and some zone to limit Upper Moreland to two second-quarter points and take a 20-11 halftime lead.

“We try to feel things out and see how teams react to it,” Chadwin said. “We went to a zone early and tried to see what they could do. They have some good shooters and we were able to take some of that away early. We just tried not to let them get comfortable.”

Though it never relinquished its lead in the second half, Radnor felt a little discomfort itself. The Bears’ Byron Hopkins, who would score 20 points, made a steal, scored a layup and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to cut a deficit to 38-27 with 5:06 left. But d’Entremont answered with a follow-up layup to restore calm.

Upper Moreland was within 44-38 with 1:05 showing, but that’s when Robinson recovered a loose ball and found Colin Lane alone for a breakaway layup. Jourdan Gregg drained a late three to draw Upper Moreland within 47-39, but by then Radnor was showing enough efficiency from the line to repel any rally.

“They’re a good team,” Upper Moreland coach Sean Feeley said. “They are well-coached. I give our guys credit. We played hard. We made some adjustments at halftime. Some stuff didn’t go our way, but we didn’t deserve to win. They played better than us tonight.

Radnor overcomes slow start to down Bishop Shanahan in district opener

DOWNINGTOWN—Defense cures a lot of ills. Tuesday night at Bishop Shanahan, No. 10 Radnor got off to a slow start offensively against the No. 7 Eagles, but a stingy defense forced some key turnovers and kept them in the game until the shots started falling in, and the Raiders (15-8) came away with a 43-28 victory over Shanahan (15-8).

Radnor will move on to play at No. 2 Penn Wood Friday night.

“This was a good win for us,” said Radnor coach Mark Jordan. “Shanahan is a quality team with a lot of quality players. We’ll come back Friday and see if we can keep it going, but we think if we play our game, we can play with anyone.”

The Raiders put a pair of players in double digits on the night, with Bri Williams and Ellie Mueller each posting 16 points in the game.

“Towards the end of the first period, things started to click for us,” said Mueller. “Shots started to fall, and we were forcing some good turnovers. Then as the game moved on, we really started crashing the boards. This was a nice team win for us.”

Shanahan jumped out to an early lead, going up by as much as 8-3, but difficulties with turnovers stopped them from getting as far out in front as they could have.

“This was a tough matchup for us,” said Shanaham coach Jim Powers. “They are long and fast and athletic. Turnovers have been a problem for us off and on all year and it really hurt us early on today. You just can’t beat a good team like Radnor if you’re turning the ball over.”

Trailing 9-7 at the end of one, Radnor began to pick things up and take control over the next two periods, and grabbed its first lead of the game when Mueller dropped one in early in the second to give the Raiders a 13-11 advantage. Over the next 15-minutes, the Raiders outscored the Eagles by a 22-12 margin. Williams scored all but two of her points in the final three periods.

Dixon helps Radnor find its feet at postseason looms

In the 2018-19 season finale, Radnor beat Strath Haven, 48-46, to clinch a District 1 Class 5A playoff berth. It paved the way for the Raiders to be dispatched by Unionville in the first round of the postseason and Haven to cap a moribund 3-19 season, leading to an offseason coaching change.

Thursday night, Radnor wound up on top, again by a 48-46 margin. But where last year’s combatants combined for a mere 14 wins, the total this year stands at 29 and counting. Both are in position to host District 1 Class 5A playoff games. Both qualified for the first installment of the extended Central League playoffs, to start Saturday.

And both face incalculably brighter horizons now then they did a year ago.

“It’s been a great four years,” said Radnor’s Colin Lane, one of seven Raiders celebrating senior night, a group that endured its three-win campaign as sophomores. “It’s been a great journey. We’re just going to keep getting better, keep getting stronger and keep going as a team.”

“A lot (different), honestly,” Strath Haven’s Matt Shuler said. “Last year we were 3-19 and we had a lot of improving to do. It’s nice to be one of the top teams in the Central League and be competing this year.”

The matchup is the latest close-to-the-vest battle in the 40s waged by the teams this year. And it carried playoff intensity, fitting since these teams could meet a couple more times down the road.

Both teams clinched spots in the six-team Central League playoffs. Garnet Valley (14-2) and Lower Merion (12-4) are the top two seeds and receive byes. A win by Penncrest (11-5) granted it the third seed. Strath Haven (15-6, 9-7 Central) fell to the sixth seed, playing Saturday at 3:30 at Lower Merion.

Radnor (14-8, 9-7) and Haverford (13-8, 9-7) meet, the Fords getting the four seed, Saturday at 3:30 at Garnet Valley.

Thursday’s affair was typically hard-nosed for a pre-playoff contest. The Raiders took the lead for good with an 11-0 run in the second quarter, a Josh Savadove 3-pointer sealing an eight-point edge at the break, 25-17.

Strath Haven threatened, getting within four early in the third before a 7-0 spurt by Radnor, then Haven nudged within three with a minute to play before Radnor did just enough at the line.
