Radnor running back Jack Wilson is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

Wilson, a junior running back, was named the Most Valuable Player of the 118th Radnor-Lower Merion football game, which the Red Raiders won, 34-0, Nov. 8. He scored two touchdowns, one of them on a 66 yard punt return. He carried the ball seven times for 45 yards, and caught two passes for 14 yards. An All-Main Line lacrosse selection last spring, Wilson has verbally committed to the University of Maryland to play lacrosse.

Q: What play from Saturday’s Radnor-Lower Merion game is most memorable to you – can you tell us a little about that play, and your role in it?

A: The most memorable play in the game would have to be the [66 yard] punt return. The wall was set up perfectly and everyone put a body on a LM jersey. I just took the ball off the bounce and followed my blockers.

Q: Who is your favorite football player? Is there a player whose game you try to pattern your own after?

A: LeSean McCoy, no doubt. What I try to take from his game is his explosiveness and the way he can change the momentum of game with in seconds.

Q: You’re also the kicker for the Radnor football team. Can you share with us how that got started?

A: I’ve actually been a soccer player my whole life, all the way up to eighth grade. When the coach asked if anyone could kick, I simply raised my hand and got the job.

Q: Who have been your top football mentors, and what has been the most important thing each of them taught you?

A: The whole coaching staff at Radnor. The most important thing they have taught me is that nothing is given to you and that you have to go out and take it.

Q: You’ve made a verbal commitment to the University of Maryland to play lacrosse. What attracted you to Maryland? What do you think you’d like to major in? Is there a career path that currently interests you?

A: I have not yet decided what I will major in yet, but I am leaning towards engineering or business. What attracted me to Maryland were the beautiful campus, great coaching staff, excellent academics and a great lacrosse program.

Football: Wilson carries Radnor to victory in rivalry

LOWER MERION — The shouting came from the Radnor sideline as a punt by Lower Merion’s Jake Weinberg bounced inside the Aces’ 40-yard line early in the second quarter of the Central League game at Arnold Field Saturday afternoon.

“Poison, poison, poison,’ were the cries of the Red Raiders’ coaches as they tried to warn their players not to pick up the football.

“I did hear them,’ junior Jack Wilson said.

The fact that he ignored what his coaches were saying didn’t turn out to mean a whole lot after Wilson dashed 66 yards down the sideline in front of his team’s bench for one of his two touchdowns, which helped visiting Radnor (4-7, 2-7) snap a six-game losing streak and earn a 34-0 decision over Lower Merion (2-9, 1-8) in the 118th renewal of one of the oldest high school rivalries in the country.

The win was the third in a row in the series for the Raiders, who have beaten Lower Merion 51 times. The Aces have come out on top in the game on 56 occasions, and 11 games have ended in a tie.

After the game — which this year was a part of the Great American Rivalry Series — Wilson, who was named most valuable player in the contest, was clutching his award as tightly as he held the football on his scoring return, his seven rushes, which accounted for 45 yards, and his two receptions (14 yards).

“I just wanted to do whatever I could to stop (Lower Merion’s) momentum,’ Wilson said. “That’s why I grabbed the ball and just took off.

“I knew winning this game meant everything for our seniors. Each weekend that we play is important, but this is the biggest weekend of the season.’

Senior quarterback Chris Leighton made the most of his final game in a football uniform, completing seven passes for 63 yards, including scoring strikes to junior Justin DiCarlo (19 yards in the first quarter) and senior Brian McKeon (five yards) in the fourth quarter.

Leighton also chipped in with 80 yards on 11 carries, and dashed across the goal line to complete a 10-yard run with 1:14 left in the third quarter. Senior Mike Thompson contributed 15 carries and 78 yards for the Raiders.

“Our line had a great game,’ Leighton said, giving seniors Alex Anderson, John Lord and Jake Schug credit for helping the Raiders to 206 yards rushing on 36 carries, a 5.7 average.

Leighton and Wilson had back-to-back 26-yard runs on the first two plays from scrimmage of the second half, with Wilson’s going for a touchdown after he got a solid downfield block from McKeon. When Leighton turned right end for his scoring run, it was McKeon who took out an Aces defender to give the quarterback a clear path to the end zone.

Radnor golfer Brynn Walker is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The Red Raider junior golfer led the Central League in scoring this season, earned medalist honors at the Central League Tournament and won the PIAA East Regional and PIAA State Girls’ Championship. This was her third straight trip to States. She has committed to play golf for the University of North Carolina.

Main Line Media News: Who is your favorite golfer, and why? Is there a golfer whose game you try to pattern your own after?

Brynn Walker: My favorite golfer is Paula Creamer. Our games aren’t very similar, but I really admire the way she handles herself on the golf course. She’s got fire in her, but presents herself in a very classy and sportsmanlike manor. I try to handle myself the same way she does whether I’m succeeding or failing. My favorite men’s player is Adam Scott. Our games are very similarly so I often watch him and find different elements of his game that I can add to mine.

Main Line Media News: What aspect of your game are you currently working on the most?

Brynn Walker: I am always trying to improve on my putting, especially my lag putting. It is one of the weakest parts of my game, so I think if I can improve on that it will really help me shoot lower scores. Also, I do most of my work on improving the mechanics of my swing and physical fitness in the off season, so that is what I am starting to focus more on.

Main Line Media News: Who have been your top golf mentors, and what has been the most important thing each of them taught you?

Brynn Walker: My biggest mentor has been my brother, Ryan. He introduced me to the game when I was 8 so I owe a lot of thanks to him. He has continued to help me out and support me throughout my golf career. Ryan is still competitively playing so he understands what it is like and it is always nice to talk about different parts of our game or after rounds… It’s somewhat comforting. Another mentor of mine is my Dad. Although he picked up the game the same time I did, he has been a tremendous help. He has always been an athlete so he knows how if feels to be in my shoes and can talk me through all types of circumstances. He’s always there helping me to improve and grow as a golfer and a person. Overall, my family has been my biggest support.

Main Line Media News: What, to you, has been the highlight of your golf career to date outside of Radnor? Can you share with us your most vivid memory of that highlight?

Brynn Walker: I have several golf memories that come to mind, but two of my favorites were my first AJGA win and my first USGA event that I qualified for. This past July, I won my first AJGA at Huntington Valley. It had been a big goal of mine fore the past two years, so it felt really good to finally achieve my goal. This past summer I played at the U.S. Girls Junior in Flagstaff, Arizona, and it was a really great experience to help me learn and grow as a player. I also was very impressed by the quality of the event and how well the USGA conducted it.

Main Line Media News: You will be playing golf for University of North Carolina. What attracted you to Chapel Hill? What do you think you’d like to major in? Is there a career path that currently interests you?

Brynn Walker: There are many different aspects of Chapel Hill that made my decision really easy. I really love my coach. We get along very well and we easily connect and relate to each other. Another aspect that was very important was the team. I stayed with the girls for two nights and was able to spend a lot of time with them. They were all so nice to me and the type of people I want to surround myself with. Although some of them may not be there when I am, it gave me a good idea of what type of people Carolina attracts. Obviously, the prestigious golf program was a big factor in my decision. It is a great program that I think will really fit me well. With all of these aspects and many more it is very easy to see why I chose Carolina! As a career, I hope to graduate from UNC and play on the LPGA tour. Right now I am considering majoring in communications. I would love to do sports broadcasting after my golf career is over.

Main Line Media News: Do you participate in any extracurricular activities at Radnor outside of golf? What sparked your interest in these activities?

Brynn Walker: I participate in youth group, Radnor Service Board, and The National Honors Society. I participate in youth group to meet more people and participate in my church community. I joined the Service Board as a way to give back to the community. I recently joined the National Honors Society to be a part of an organization that helps develop well rounded young men and women. My freshman year at Radnor I played on the varsity basketball team. However, I made the decision to stop playing and focus solely on golf.
