Radnor bounces back to stay alive in District 1 tournament

RADNOR — Being shut out for the first time in 15 games and only the second time this season did not sit well with Radnor. Getting dumped into the playback portion of the District 1 Class 2A field hockey tournament wasn’t ideal, either.

Yet that was the hand the top-seeded Raiders were dealt and the one thing Radnor coach Katie Maguire wanted to see was how her team would respond.

She didn’t have to wait long for an answer.

Olivia Shea and Brigid Lowry scored in the first 5 minutes, 18 seconds and that fast start powered Radnor to a 7-3 victory over fifth-seeded Phoenixville Tuesday afternoon at Encke Field.

The win earned the Raiders (16-4) another home date, this time on Friday for the fifth and final PIAA berth from District 1 against sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy, a 6-2 winner over No. 7 Bishop Shanahan. Starting time has yet to be determined.

“Our team does better when we score first,” Shea said. “In our last game we got beat in the first half and it definitely put us down. Today, we were more together as a team.”

The Raiders went on to score five times in the first half to hold off the feisty Phantoms (15-5-1). Shea had two of her three goals in the opening 30 minutes. Page Lowry also scored twice in the first half and Barb Civitella had four assists. Radnor also had a goal disallowed.

PhilaFH Winning Coach of the Week: Radnor’s Katie Maguire

by Kathleen Harte Simone
Philafieldhockey Founder

Fourteen in a row: that’s how many games the Radnor field hockey team has won this season — including two last week — under Coach Katie Maguire’s direction. Things weren’t always looking so promising for the Raiders; the team dropped the first three games of 2018… but it’s been all wins ever since.

Maguire also serves as an assistant lacrosse coach at Radnor — a legacy program that captured the state title in 2017. Now, in her third year, Maguire is elevating the field hockey program as a true contender in the robust Central League. The team fell to six-time undefeated Central League champion Conestoga early in the season 2-1; one might question how the Raiders would fare now with 14 wins on the board.

Last week, Maguire led the team to two wins over non-league opponent Prendie (6-1) and Upper Darby (6-0). It was the sixth shutout of the season. The team propelled to #1 in District One 2A power rankings — the highest under Maguire’s watch and best in recent program history.

But perhaps what makes Maguire particularly worthy of the honor is the incredible respect she’s earned from her players, each of whom nominated their coach praising her more for the attributes she brings to the program than the wins. The players acknowledge Maguire for her unmatched dedication to the program, ability to push them to greatness,  and positive outlook no matter the score.

Radnor’s players also wished the PhilaFH Winning Coach of the Week honor to be a surprise — a thank you for all that Maguire has done for the program and for them personally.

Harriton nets District 1 AAA team tennis title

Whitemarsh >> A few minutes after Harriton’s 5-0 victory in the PIAA District 1 Class AAA team finals Thursday, Ram head coach Kathi Rees reflected on her talented team’s strong bonds.

“The great thing about this team is that it’s been together for at least three years, the partnerships are there, and some of these girls have been playing tennis since they have been 4 or 5 years old,” said Rees. “They’re a great group of girls, on and off the court, they work hard and they’re going to do great [the rest of] this season.”

Harriton (16-0) was considered a pre-season favorite to reach the PIAA Class AAA state final again, and Rees says the Rams have handled the lofty pre-season expectations very well this season.

“They all play in tournaments [outside Harriton], and they all play a lot of tennis, so [every PIAA match] is just like another match to them,” said Rees. “They’re very focused on each match, and they’ve handled the pressure really well.”

Thursday afternoon at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School, the top seeded Rams swept talented No. 2 seed Conestoga (14-2) in the championship finals. Four of the matches were won in straight sets.

At first singles, senior Sophia Sassoli defeated talented senior Cassidy Landau (12-3), 6-0, 6-0.

“It was super windy out here today, so I tried to be really solid, because Cassidy is a really consistent player,” said Sassoli, who has committed to Georgia Tech. “I made a lot of first serves, and I tried to come in a lot, and not let the ball get too high so the wind couldn’t take control of it.”

Five days earlier, Sassoli teamed with sophomore Saige Roshkoff, the Rams’ No. 2 singles player, to capture the Central League doubles championship.

“Saige and I had a lot of fun that day, we were setting each other up well,” said Sassoli.

Roshkoff said, “We were trying to be aggressive at the net.”

Thursday, Roshkoff won by a 6-2, 6-1 count at second singles against Priya Aravindhan (7-2).

“It was tough today because of the wind, but I tried to stay patient and use the wind to my advantage,” said Roshkoff.

At third singles, senior Nina Hoog prevailed in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1, against freshman Ananya Krishman (10-2). Hoog’s victory clinched the District 1 title for the Rams; interestingly, she also had the clinching victory that earned Harriton the Central League title earlier this season.

“It’s great to win [the clinching match],” said a smiling Hoog, who has committed to Case Western. “Knowing we already had two wins today, and that mine could be the third, it does put a bit of pressure [on me], but it feels really good to know that once you’ve won your match, the whole round is over.

“The windy conditions today were a bit hard to get used to. A lot of balls that I’m sure both of us [Hoog and Krishnan] usually don’t miss indoors were missed. The wind pushes some balls out [of bounds], and then some other balls that you expect to go out curve back in. It takes some getting used to, but once you figure out how to cooperate with [the wind], it gets a lot easier.”

Hoog and her Harriton teammates are looking forward to going back to States.

“I remember the support from everyone last year [at States], everyone gets so loud,” said Hoog. “A lot of people who aren’t directly involved with the team, like parents, previous [Harriton] players, they come out to see us play, and that’s one of my favorite things about States.”

Conestoga, as one of the top four finishers in District 1 AAA, also will be headed to States, as they did last year.

Landau said, “I’m excited to be going back to [team] States again. It’s a lot of fun staying in the hotel with the team, all that team bonding, we usually go out to dinner, and to Chocolate World, and there’s the tennis too [laughs].”

Football Notebook: Radnor proves it belongs with Delco’s elite

If there were any questions about Radnor’s toughness and talent, those doubts were put to rest, once and for all, last Friday night.

In going to overtime with undefeated Garnet Valley (8-0), one of the top teams in District 1 Class 6A, the Raiders proved they are a team built to win now.

Maybe we should’ve known all along.

Radnor (6-2) is the No. 5 team in the Daily Times Super 7. One could argue they are the second-best team in Delco, behind only Garnet Valley. And, quite frankly, one could wonder exactly how much “better” Garnet Valley really is.

It’s unusual for any team to feel good after a heartbreaking loss, but Radnor is a different story. The Raiders showed, back in Week 3, that it was not the same old Radnor team that has underachieved for years. Every season the Raiders produce talented players who move on to the collegiate level, which is a testament to longtime coach Tom Ryan and his staff. But no Radnor team under Ryan’s tutelage has learned to put it altogether, until this year.

The Raiders began 4-0, beating Marple Newtown in three overtimes and then scoring 63 points against Ridley. At that time, they were clearly a team to watch.

When they suffered a 40-16 defeat at Haverford High (7-1), the No. 2 team in Delco, perhaps there was concern that the loss would have a lingering effect. Although the Raiders came up short, they were never deterred. So they turned the page and continued winning lopsided games. Two weeks ago they put up 35 points against Springfield. Garnet Valley scored only six against Springfield in a shutout the week prior.
