Field Hockey: Lowry’s overtime goal rewards Radnor’s determination

RADNOR >> Katie Maguire coaches field hockey and lacrosse at Radnor High. She also is a big football fan — when it comes to motivational speeches.

“We were doing a group text about positive attitudes,” Maguire, the Raiders’ first-year head field hockey coach, said after her team’s 3-2 District 1 Class 2A playoff overtime victory over Harriton Wednesday afternoon.

“What I sent them was from a Michigan-Michigan State football game. The message was ‘Never give up; never give in.’”

The eighth-seeded Raiders (11-8), who trailed at halftime, 2-1, didn’t back away from the challenge posed by the Rams (10-8). Freshman Barbara Civitella scored in the fourth minute of the second half for the Raiders, and sophomore Page Lowry, assisted by senior Emma Majercak, finished the scoring in the fifth minute of overtime.

“We had a close game with (Harriton) the first time we played them this season,” Maguire said. “But we didn’t talk much about that game. Everything was about keeping things positive for this game, going into it with a positive attitude.”

Radnor will try to keep things positive for its quarterfinal matchup with top-seeded Villa Maria Friday. VM advanced with a 14-0 victory over Springfield.

“This was about (the players) doing what they wanted to do,” Maguire said. “Now we have a couple days before we have to get ready for what is coming next.”

Lowry, who scored an overtime game-winner against Archbishop Carroll in 2015, didn’t realize at first that she had put the finishing touches on Wednesday’s victory.

Radnor’s Gabby Kim finished seventh at 158 while her younger sister June Kim carded a 173 for 13th place at the PIAA Class 3A Golf Championships held Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York.

Conestoga sophomore Samantha Yao placed second with a 2-over 146. A day after working her way to the top of the leaderboard tied for first, Yao got off to a rough start Tuesday, which eventually enabled Peters Township senior Mia Kness to claim the gold with an even-par 144.

Football: Williams’ return ignites Radnor in shutout

TREDYFFRIN >> Radnor senior Naair Williams waited a long time for Friday night, having not played since the season opener due to a knee injury. The rest of the Raiders waited even longer, not beating Conestoga since 2002. Friday night, Williams was the workhorse and the Radnor defense stood tall as the Raiders got over that hump with a big 10-0 Central League win over Conestoga at Teamer Field.

“I’ve been here 10 years and this is my first time beating them,” Radnor head coach Tom Ryan said. “I’m really proud of the way we played in all three phases.”

The biggest injury returnee was Williams, whose 55 yards on 16 carries don’t exactly jump off the page. But the pounding the 5-11, 210-pound Williams put on the Conestoga defensive line with each carry made a big difference and loosened things up for other Radnor backs like Isaiah Coates (32 yards) and Zach Wade (35 yards), who had the game’s only touchdown.

“I was fired up to get out there,” Williams said. “In the first quarter I was feeling pretty good, and the knee feels fine. Pounding up front was part of the game plan, and then we were able to switch it up at halftime a bit.”

Radnor jumped out to a 7-0 on the first series of the game, marching down the field on a six-play, 66-yard drive that ended with Wade’s 7-yard touchdown run. The Raiders (3-5, 2-4 Central) got some help from Conestoga, thanks to an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for some post-play pushing and shoving that set up first-and-goal. After that, Conestoga (2-6, 2-5) moved the ball well but was never able to finish things off when it mattered. That had a lot to do with the Radnor defense, which pestered quarterback Nick Braendel all night, flushing him out of the pocket and blanketing his receiving options.

“They were putting a lot of pressure on early and trying to get me to throw fast and not make good passes,” said Braendel, who finished 8-for-13 for 61 yards and was flushed from the pocket at least 10 times on the night. “It made me boot out of the pocket and try to make something happen. They were taking the linebackers and sending them late and all the pressure just made plays fall apart.”

The biggest play of the night for Conestoga was one that didn’t really happen. Trailing 10-0 in the fourth quarter, Braendel fumbled a shotgun snap from his own 24. The junior scooped it up and tried to make something happen, breaking tackles and weaving through the secondary for what appeared to be an electrifying 76-yard touchdown run.

Hederick, Ciarrocchi lead Radnor into states

Radnor’s state tournament drought for girls team tennis is over. Wins by Grace Hederick and Kanon Ciarrocchi in singles play, and a victory by Grave Moore and Lucy Hederick at first doubles was what the seventh-seeded Raiders needed to stun second-seeded Conestoga, 3-1, in the quarterfinals of the District 1 Class 3A team tournament Thursday.

That win earned Radnor a berth in the semifinals and also put the Raiders in the Oct. 25 PIAA team tournament for the first time since 2010. Radnor takes on the winner of sixth-seeded Downingtown West and No. 3 Harriton in the district semis. That match was postponed to Oct. 17.

Grace Hederick was a 7-6 (2), 6-4 winner over Ashley Griffith at first singles. Ciarrocchi won by default at second singles. Moore and Lucy Hederick bounced back from a loss in the first set to clinch the match with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Priya Aravindhan and Olivia Dodge.

Golf: Kims are in prime position at district golf tourney

If the first day of the District 1 Golf Championship is any indication, Tuesday’s tournament finale could be a very special day for the Kims of Radnor.

Gabby Kim finished the first 18 holes at Gilbertsville Golf Club tied for the lead in the Class AAA tournament, and June Kim was one shot back of the leading pair.

Gabby Kim birdied the par-4 6th and 7th holes at Gilbertsville to tally a six-over 77, even with Central Bucks East’s Sophia Mancuso for the tournament lead. June Kim struggled down the stretch on the back nine with three consecutive bogeys, but she still covered the course in 78 strokes, all alone in third place, one shot clear of Conestoga’s Samantha Yao and two ahead of a quartet of players heading into Tuesday’s second round at Turtle Creek Golf Club.

Chichester’s Caprian Kan is also in the hunt with a 13-over 84. She’s among the 17 golfers (top 15 plus ties) advancing to Tuesday.
