Two-time champ Radnor bounces back in big way

HAVERFORD — Two-time defending PIAA boys Class 3A champion Radnor got back in the win column with a 14-2 Central League decision over Haverford Tuesday night at A.G. Cornog Field.

It was exactly what the Raptors needed to rinse the agony of defeat from their mouths via an 8-7 loss in the opener to highly regarded Episcopal Academy.

The Raptors aren’t used to losing, period. With 16 seniors gone, coach John Begier said there will be growing pains.

On this chilly night the Raptors had each other’s backs. Not that they’d been daydreaming of matching the state record of three straight boys lacrosse championships set by Conestoga from 2010-12.

“We’re not focused on the state championship,” said junior attack Kessy Cox, who contributed two goals and two assists Tuesday. “We’re focused on every day getting better. The end goal would be to reach that. But a game like that first one definitely shocked us, like woke us up. We realized that we have a lot of work to do to get back to that point.”

The Raptors put on a clinic in the first half, the starters seeing much of the action while powering to a 9-0 lead. Fords goalie Wade Devitis made several outstanding saves or it would have been a lot worse.

The Fords (2-2, 0-1) were outshot, 25-0, before getting their first shots on goal in the last minute of the first half.

Ford coach Bryan Aura didn’t have to applaud Begier, the reigning National Interscholastic Lacrosse Coaches Association coach of the year, but his respect for his colleague and the Radnor program are one and the same.

“They’re the two-time defending state champs for a reason,” Aura said. “Great coaching, players. We’re fortunate that we play in the Central League and we get an opportunity to line up against them once a year. That’s all we can ask. It’s a learning experience. This is an eye-opening experience for a team to see what quality and really good lacrosse looks like. That’s what we have to build towards.”

The Raptors starters had such control on their possessions the ball didn’t touch the ground in the passing game. The substitutes played a chunk of the second half for both sides.

Colin French led the Raptors with three goals and two assists, Max Goldstein had two goals and four assists and Jackson Gaffney produced four assists and one goal for the raptors. Mason Montrella and Nate Lucchesi contributed two goals apiece and Tommy DeShan and Henry Pierce each had a goal for the Raptors.

“I think it’s a great team win,” Cox said. “We bounced back after the EA loss. We didn’t play our best game. But it’s great to get back out there with the guys and get our first win and get the momentum going and start moving forward. After the loss we all came together and took practice really seriously. Everyone came together in practice and tonight we played together as a team.”
