Radnor’s Jayden Lee is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week (March 18-24)

The junior wrestler and team captain won the Central League Tournament with three consecutive pins at 114 pounds, finished second at the PIAA District 1 North tournament, then placed second at the PIAA Southeast Regional tournament as the No. 9 seed, defeating the top seed in the quarterfinals and the No. 4 seed in the semifinals. He won a match at the PIAA state tournament to finish 31-11 (with 16 pins) on the season. Radnor wrestling head coach Justin Schellenger said, “Jayden may have a laid-back demeanor but is fiercely competitive and laser-focused on his training. He has been the hardest worker inside our room and in the off-season. As a junior captain he led by example daily and shows immense care for his teammates while also pushing them to be their best.”

Radnor’s improbable title in the genes for Danner

HAVERFORD — It had been more than two decades since Radnor ice hockey won an ICSHL Central championship.

Sophomore goaltender James Danner has a special connection to that Radnor team from way back when: His dad Jim was the starting goalie.

The younger Danner made dad proud Thursday night at the Skatium, stopping 31 of 33 shots as No. 7 Radnor crushed fifth-seeded Springfield, 8-2, to win the trophy.

“It’s special,” Danner Jr. said. “It’s the first time in 21, 22 years, and it doesn’t get better than that. It’s a great moment.”

The Raptors surprised the entire Central Division in the tournament. And perhaps Springfield took them too lightly Thursday.

Of Radnor’s eight tallies, a handful seemed to come out of nowhere, whether it was due to a Springfield turnover or a failure to hustle back on a clear. The latter occurred in the third period with Radnor clinging to a 3-2 lead. The Raptors were on the penalty kill and had cleared the puck out of their zone. Sophomore sniper Stephen Sucher beat the Springfield defenseman to the puck behind the net then jammed it past goalie Matt Razzi.

Springfield was left in a state of shock, which would worsen four minutes later when Sucher came away with a steal in the Cougars zone. Sucher was left uncovered and fired a laser past Razzi for Radnor’s fifth goal.

Sucher’s two goals effectively buried the Cougars, part of five third-period tallies.

“Coming into the third period, we had the energy,” Sucher said. “We had to take a breather, and once we took that breather, we said we were going to come into this period and we’re going to win this and we did just that. I just want to thank all of my brothers, man. We came out to work. Ever since the first practice, we knew that we were going to be a family and we were going to fight hard all season. We maybe had some bad games, but we came into this game knowing that we were going to win and that we’re brothers and that we’re going to play for each other.”

Radnor (10-11) made an improbable run in the Central tournament after winning just seven of its 18 games during the regular season. (It is the second straight year a No. 7 seed has won the tournament, Penncrest turning the trick last year.) The Raptors had lost five in a row prior to the playoffs. Nobody, except themselves, expected to see the Raptors celebrating Thursday night.

“We have quite a few kids every year that play club together but this is a unique class,” said Donald Sucher, Radnor’s head coach and Stephen’s dad. “There is excellent senior leadership on this team and that is what won us this championship. It’s all about my players. My players are top notch, great athletes and great kids. I’m just here to guide them along, you know what I mean?”

Zhang sets the tone as Radnor upends Marple Newtown

ASTON — If seventh seeded Radnor was supposed to go quietly against second seeded Marple Newtown in the first round of the ICSHL Central League playoffs Monday, nobody told them.

In fact, the Raptors felt the pressure was squarely on the Tigers.

“No one beats anybody three times in a row,” Raptors senior Andy Zhang said. “We lost to them twice but both games were close. We knew we could beat them.”

Knowing is believing as the Raptors bounced back from an early one-goal deficit with four straight goals, two by Zhang, to secure a 4-2 decision over the Tigers at Iceworks and advance to the semifinals Wednesday against Penncrest, which defeated Haverford 3-2.

Zhang tallied the third and fourth goals for the Raptors, finding the net for the first time with a backbreaker with just two seconds left in the first period. It gave the Raptors a 3-1 lead entering the second frame.

The Raptors scored three goals on their first four shots against goalie AJ Tedesco, who allowed just one goal the rest of the game.

“Our starts aren’t great, but we bounce back pretty well,” Zhang said. “Our goalie was amazing. He kept us in the game.”

Goalie James Danner recorded a dozen saves in the first period for the Raptors, who were outshot 35-16 in the game and shelled early on.

It sure looked like it was going to be a long night for Radnor when the Tigers tallied in the first three minutes, Tyler Newby burying a pass from Zachary Dembzynski, who had two assists on the evening.

Radnor’s Kate Gallagher is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week (Feb. 12-18)

The senior guard and captain, a second team All-Main Line girls’ basketball selection last winter, has been a key factor in the Raptors’ successful season (18-4 and ranked No. 2 in the PIAA District 1 5A Power Rankings as of Feb. 8). She has scored more than 20 points per game on multiple occasions in the past month, is a fine rebounder (averaged 5 rpg last winter) and generally guards the other team’s best player. A fine all-around athlete, Gallagher will play lacrosse for the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Radnor girls’ basketball head coach Rob Baxter said, “Kate has been an outstanding leader for us on and off the court. She is respected by all her teammates for her competitive nature and dedication to the team. She has improved each year with not only her basketball skills but also working to get stronger, which I believe has benefited her on both the basketball court and the lacrosse field.”
