Selah Koleth, Radnor keep control in midfield in win over Springfield

SPRINGFIELD — In keeping with her exemplary vision on the field, Selah Koleth can see the similarities through the years.

Two years ago, as a sophomore winger, Koleth understood the strength of the Radnor team that reached the PIAA Class 3A final to be a senior-laden midfield triangle that controlled games and dictated tempo on both ends of the field.

As a senior, Koleth is pulling the strings. Juniors Ivy Chaskelson and Olivia Jacobs, freshmen goal scorers then in the passel of talents tasked with running off that midfield, have dropped deeper to impact the game with their technical skill.

Instances like Tuesday’s 4-0 handling of Springfield offer glimpses of what their midfield can become.

“We’re all super experienced and we’ve been playing ECNL (Elite Club National League club team), super highly competitive leagues for a long time,” Koleth said. “I think that our experience and our soccer IQ that we’ve developed over how long we’ve played at that level has made it so we can play against any competition.”

In the fall of 2021, Daily Times Player of the Year Emily Daiutolo was the midfield tone-setter, with fellow All-Delco Jane Daiutolo as a playmaking No. 10. Next to Emily was Kate Boujoukos, a physical and disciplined two-way presence.

Those roles roughly translate now to Koleth, Chaskelson and Jacobs. Koleth directs the orchestra; the game moves at whichever pace the George Washington commit selects. Jacobs, with her long stride and great touch, controls the space whether Radnor has the ball or not. And Chaskelson, true to her goal-scoring roots, is used to charging at the backline in possession.

Koleth opened the scoring in the 12th minute, her drive from 30 yards fluttering just enough to put off Springfield goalie Alyssa Estep’s effort to get a glove to it. The through balls she played and the way her one-on-one threat freezes the defense was unlucky not to unlock the defense earlier.

“When she has the ball, I can usually tell if she’s going to take a bunch of people on or look for the pass and slow it down, or make it faster,” Chaskelson said. “I go off of that and make my run according to that.”

Estep, who made a couple of great saves in the second half, struggled early. She’ll want the second goal back, Chaskelson letting fly from 28 yards in the 18th minute, catching the goalie moving the wrong way.

But Springfield (4-2-1, 2-2 Central) calmed the game down, despite Radnor (5-2, 3-1) monopolizing the ball. It wasn’t until the 77th minute that Radnor added on, Lila Furey and Anna Reger beating a tired backline.

Springfield was without Kaylin Silberstein in midfield, one of the players whose skill can help relieve pressure. Radnor kept them hemmed in most of the day, and while the Cougars connected passes, they often came too far from goal to create much danger.
