Radnor’s Charlie Thornton is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week (Feb. 13-19)

The 6-foot-5 senior forward, a second team All-Main Line boys basketball selection last winter, has been on fire for the Raptors the past few weeks, averaging 14 ppg, 4 rpg and 2 spg as Radnor compiled a 22-0 regular season record. He leads the Raptors in deflection and blocks and was named MVP of the KSA Orlando (Fla.) Tournament earlier this season. Radnor boys basketball head coach Jamie Chadwin said, “Charlie is the consummate multi-tool player. He makes us better shooting the ball, as a rebounder, with his court vision, and defense. Most impressive though, is that Charlie demands a lot from himself and his teammates and is never above doing what needs to be done to pull our team closer together. He is special and I feel lucky to get to coach him.”

Radnor readjusts focus on Lower Merion

RADNOR — The losses ultimately didn’t mean much, but the lessons were well-taken.

Radnor’s boys basketball team started the 2021-22 season 13-0. It stumbled twice in the regular season, reached the Central League and District 1 Class 5A finals and the second round of states before meeting the buzzsaw that is Imhotep Charter. By any measure, Radnor maxed out its talent.

But the rare setbacks in a 23-5 season left an impression, for a nine-strong senior class determined not to feel that sting again. And so a motto was born in the locker room, among a group in the rare position of being the favorite just about every time out this season.

The focus, forward Jackson Hicke says, is on trying to put together a one-game winning streak.

Twenty-three of them have led the Raptors back to the Central League final, against a familiar foe in Lower Merion, Monday night at Harriton (7:45 tipoff).

“We kind of forget the past games, focus on the one we have,” Hicke said after dispatching Springfield, 64-35, in the semifinals Saturday. “We really can’t take anything for granted. Last year, we lost a couple of bad ones when we weren’t really ready to play. We’re in the mindset now where we know we can’t take a game off, can’t take a play off, because there’s too much on the line.”

Radnor is 23-0, the wins by an average of 21.3 points per. Only two games have been decided by single digits – in overtime against Garnet Valley and a two-point win over North Worcester of Massachusetts in a Christmas tournament in Florida. Their next closest brushes against Pennsylvania opposition is a trio of 15-point wins, over Archbishop Ryan, Holy Ghost Prep and Harriton. The warnings about letdowns from coach Jamie Chadwin have been heeded.

Second-seeded Lower Merion (20-3) accounted for two of last year’s losses: A 60-48 humbling at home in the regular season, then a 59-49 handling in the final. That team had Penn State freshman Demetrius Lilley as its central focus. This one is talented if less star-driven. It has lost to three different Central League foes, a rarity for the league’s perennial presiding power.

Mary Sareen’s bomb lights fuse for Radnor in Central playoff win over GV

CONCORD — The first half of the Radnor-Garnet Valley Central League playoff quarterfinal was fairly mundane, a standard back-and-forth affair. Both teams performed very well on the defensive end, but the offensive side left a lot to be desired.

Until Mary Sareen decided she’d had enough.

Radnor’s senior guard swished a 3-pointer from the corner as time was running out in the first half, giving the Raptors a one-point lead at the break. Sareen lit the spark this game desperately needed.

“It gave us some juice,” Radnor coach Rob Baxter said. “I thought we played well without that, but that was really big. We talked about coming out (in the third quarter) and starting off right off the bat.”

The momentum boost carried over for the fifth-seeded Raptors, who dominated the second half and rolled past the defending Central League champion and No. 4 Jaguars, 50-32.

Radnor (15-8) will travel to No. 1 Haverford (22-0) in the semifinal round Saturday.

After Jordan Daubenberger made three free throws to give Garnet Valley a 17-15 lead late in the second quarter, preceding Sareen’s corner buzzer beater, Radnor outscored the host team 35-15 the rest of the way. The difference was the all-around efficiency of the Raptors, who were economical with their field goal attempts (13-for-23) and brilliant at the foul line (21-for-26). In the fourth quarter they converted 17 of 20 attempts from the charity stripe.

Garnet Valley managed only two free-throw attempts after halftime. Radnor’s gritty zone defense also did a fine job shutting down sophomore Haylie Adamski (seven points), the Jags’ leading scorer.

“Our play the whole first half was so good and we shut Adamski down,” said Sareen, who scored a game-high 16 points and went 6-for-8 at the foul line. “We were just playing so well together and I thought all of that combined pushed us in the third and fourth quarters.”

The Raptors outhustled the Jaguars on rebounds and loose balls and did a better job executing their plays on offense. Whether it was Meg Dole pulling up to go 4-for-4 from the floor or freshman Anna Reger driving to the rack for an easy layup on a nice feed from Sareen, it was obvious that Radnor had the upper hand in the second half in every facet.

Perhaps things would have gone differently for the Raptors had Sareen not drilled that 3-ball at the end of the second quarter.
