DLN ALL-AREA: Conestoga’s Klebe waits her turn, then makes most of it in amazing junior campaign

Just one year ago, Abby Klebe sat alongside her junior varsity teammates and watched Conestoga’s varsity team fall one goal short — in double overtime, no less — in the state championship game to end the 2019 season.

As a talented sophomore, Klebe knew she could compete at the varsity level, but understood there was a talent-heavy group of upperclassmen ahead of her.

So when the 2020 season finally began, after a long COVID-related delay with plenty of caveats, the junior took full advantage of the opening, and immediately established herself as a threat to opposing defenses.

Klebe tallied 12 goals and two assists in just 12 games against usually strong Central League opposition. She did it all as a junior playing her first season on the varsity roster, and finished it off by earning Daily Local News All-Area Girls Soccer Player of the Year honors.

“I think the preparation of being on JV-A definitely helped,” said Klebe. “I have really big shoes to fill. I tried my best this season to be a replacement for what we had last season. I noticed right away the intensity was a lot higher so it was a bit of an adjustment, but it was definitely good for my skills.”

When you suit up in the maroon and white of Conestoga, you know competition for a starting spot will be tough. Klebe was forced to be patient, as two Division I players sat above her on the depth chart: Villanova’s Mac Coleman and 2019 DLN All-Area Player of the Year Caitlin Donovan (La Salle) sat above her on the depth chart.

“It was a problem with having too much talent available.” said Conestoga head coach Ben Wilson. “Just to give Abby more playing time, we kept her down a few years, so that when she came up she could just completely take over for those players when they were gone. Luckily that came true.”

In the offseason, Klebe runs track, and it shows on the soccer field. Her speed sets her apart as a competitor, and coupled with her talent as a finisher, she’s a force to be reckoned with on the offensive end.

“My speed is a huge strength,” Klebe said. “A lot of the time I’m able to beat defenders just by chasing a ball.”

DLN ALL-AREA: From relative anonymity to Player of the Year, Conestoga’s Burling took Central League by storm

Virtually all of the local high school soccer players were thrilled that the 2020 season actually took place, but nobody seized the opportunity more than Conestoga’s Tyson Burling.

A solid but unspectacular performer as a junior, Burling put together a remarkable senior campaign, and the Devon resident is now garnering all sorts of postseason accolades — including All-Area Player of the Year honors from the Daily Local News.

“If I’m honest, I would not have necessarily predicted the season he had,” said ’Stoga head coach Dave Zimmerman. “It was a pleasant surprise that he played so well.”

While others were lamenting a shortened season staged during a global pandemic, Burling was excelling. The left winger poured in an area-best 15 goals in just 14 outings, and helped lead the Pioneers to an unbeaten season and the Central League crown.

“To be honest, I did surprise myself,” Burling said. “I didn’t have a particularly great junior season. So I focused on soccer with this being my senior year.

“I seemed to find myself in the right position at the right time. My soccer IQ and experience just seemed to come together and I was in good spots to find the ball and finish.”

Over the years, Burling’s soccer prowess has been underestimated, particularly at the club level. But time and time again, he exceeded expectations as long as somebody was willing to give him a chance.

“I’ve always believed in myself but it’s been tough in the club system,” he said. “They just didn’t believe in me. But my high school coaches all believe in my ability.”

Zimmerman added: “Tyson’s always been a ‘B team’ player in his club system. He was always told he wasn’t good enough to be on the ‘A team.’ That always motived him. He has a chip on his shoulder to show people that they had misjudged him.

“I always saw good things in Tyson. But he came out this season and played at another level that I hadn’t seen. He was a good player last season, but not like this.”

Burling was named the Central League MVP, and then garnered all-region and all-state honors as well. He finished with 15 goals and three assists, and was particularly impressive in big matches. He opened the scoring with a goal in a 3-2 overtime regular season win against Lower Merion, and then added two more goals in a 5-3 rematch against the Aces in the Central League Championship Game.

“He just loves to play,” Zimmerman explained. “It looked like we weren’t going to play this season at all. So the fact that we got to play, Tyson more than anyone else recognized the opportunity, even more than any of the other seniors. He seemed like he was on a mission. He was playing like he was possessed.”

All-Central Football: McGarrey’s last charge was a vital one for Garnet Valley

Kevin McGarrey can imagine worse ways to end his high school career. He went out scoring the biggest touchdown of Garnet Valley’s season.

The play was a quarterback keeper, and the senior was off and running, a 60-yard jaunt to the end zone. It happened in the biggest game of his life — the Central League championship in November — and his objective at the time was to provide a much-needed spark for his GV mates. McGarrey’s incredible scoring scamper snapped the Jags out of an early malaise against Marple Newtown.

The sheer joy of McGarrey’s dash ended in misfortune when he was tackled in the end zone, incurring a serious shoulder injury along the way. It ended McGarrey’s night.

The bright side? Garnet Valley rallied from a two-touchdown deficit, thanks to the light provided by McGarrey’s touchdown, as the Jags went on to rout the Tigers, 52-30. McGarrey was able to watch the remainder of the game on the sideline, shoulder in a sling, and witness the Jags put the finishing touches on a 6-0 season.

Weeks later, upon reflection on the play that effectively ended his playing career, McGarrey offered a positive outlook.

“At least it wasn’t a sack,” he said.

Indeed, he will take his football play with him for the rest of his life.

“It’s something that I won’t forget,” he said.

McGarrey was one of the Jags’ MVPs and senior captains. It’s rare to see any Garnet Valley quarterback rank among the Delaware County leaders in passing, but McGarrey was an exception to the rule. He threw for 509 yards, good for seventh in Delco, and seven TDs. He also ran for 185 yards and three scores.

A case could be made that McGarrey was the most valuable QB in the Central League, even though he was voted second team by coaches and Conestoga’s (1-4) Michael Costigan was selected to the first team.

“Right when (the injury) happened, even before I knew I was hurt, I knew at that moment the entire team was going to be hyped up,” McGarrey said. “The energy absolutely skyrocketed when that happened and I knew they were going to get the job done for me.

“We were down 14-0 at the time, and I knew we had to score. On that particular play nothing really snapped in my head. I knew if I didn’t score somebody else on the team would, because everyone is capable of doing something great.”

GV scored the next four touchdowns and had seized control at halftime. McGarrey watched with pride as junior Max Busenkell stepped in his place at quarterback and completed 8 of 9 passes for 167 yards and two TDs. Busenkell had never played quarterback on varsity prior to that night.

“He was amazing,” McGarrey said. “I knew he would come in and lead us.”

The All-Central League football team, voted on by the league’s head coaches, was announced last week.

The strong Garnet Valley contingent included Reynolds (running back), Gallagher (wide receiver), Sam DiTrolio (center), Zach Libertore (kicker), Alex Nicolaides (linebacker), Will Wrzesniewski (linebacker) and CJ Wood (defensive back), who were chosen to the Class 6A first team. The Jags were far and away the best team in the league, outscoring the opposition, 291-56.

McGarrey was among seven GV players selected to the second team, joining Brendan Henry (offensive line), Brian Bradley (running back), Nolan Brennan (defensive line), Sam Morin (defensive line), Ryan Saunders (defensive back) and Liberatore (punter).
