Philadelphia >> As the sun started to rise and teams preparing to play the first games of the 16th annual Maggie Lucas Philly.com Girls Play-By-Play Classic Jan. 15 began filing in, event co-founder Jeremy Treatman was hard work making sure it would be a special day for everyone involved.
For the past four years, one of those teams has been Radnor, taking part in what Red Raider head coach Mark Jordan terms “The breakfast special.” Despite the early morning tip-off, there is always a smile on his face as he relays how special and memorable this day will be for his players.
“Being part of the Maggie Lucas Philly.com Girls Play-By-Play Classic is cool,” said Radnor senior Allison Lanzone, who has played in this game every year throughout her career. “It has a different feel than games in our home gym and to raise attention for girl’s basketball makes it a cool experience.”
As they have done in prior years, Radnor got off to a slow start, turning a 15-11 deficit after one quarter into a 32-26 halftime lead due mostly to defensive pressure leading to turnovers. In the end, Radnor’s full-court press proved to be too much for Springside Chestnut Hill as the Red Raiders registered a 56-39 win.
“We got off to a slow start probably due to the time of the game,” said Lanzone, who was named her team’s game MVP finishing with 17 points and four steals. “It was cool to play in an environment like today and not just in front of our parents. The win did mark a nice start to the day.”
Teammate Nicole Massimino added 17 points, seven steals and six assists while Ellie Mueller chipped in with eight.
