Radnor wrestler Tom Meyers is Main Line Boys Athlete of the Week

Posted On: Tuesday, February 03, 2015
By: ldevlin

The senior 170-pounder is the all-time career wins leader for Radnor, earning his record-breaking 109th win Jan. 28 with a 3-1 victory against Springfield’s Joey Sciarrino, a family friend. As of Feb. 2, Meyers is 29-0 with a career won-loss mark of 110-15. Meyers has finished first in each of the last four Radnor Holiday Wrestling Tournaments, joining older brothers John (Class of 2009) and Bob (a 2011 Radnor grad) for a total of 10 first-place finishes in 10 appearances in the Radnor tourney. Combining Meyers’ career record with Bob (104-14) and John (80-13), the three Meyers brothers are 294-42 at Radnor (as of Feb. 2). Next fall, Meyers will attend University of Massachusetts, where he will play lacrosse.

Main Line Media News: Tell us about your record-breaking win against Joey Sciarrino — what did it mean to you to break the record?

Tom Meyers: I was losing 1-0 after two periods, then I escaped and finally got a takedown to win. Breaking the career win record at Radnor High School was a big deal for me, given all the great wrestlers that have come through the program. The record was previously set by Randall Braunfeld, who wrestled for University of Pennsylvania more than 20 years ago. As soon as my hand was raised, I high-fived my oldest brother John and pointed to my parents in the stands. I have had this goal in my sights for a long time. My dad and brothers have always worked with me to improve my technique and mental preparation. I’m really thankful to my parents who have supported me, as well as the coaches and teammates that have trained with me over the last 12 years.
